Let's welcome our newest wallflower... « Thread Started on Nov 2, 2009, 6:49pm »
...Allison!
Hi. Hola. Aloha. Bonjour. Guten tag. Shalom.
Okay, enough with the international salutations. We'll be here all day.
Now would probably be a good time to say a few words about myself, wouldn't it?
Okay, let's start with the basics...
Name: already covered that one Age: 25 Location: blowing around the Windy City (and I do mean "around" - I don't live in the city anymore, but I'm not too far from it)
And now for some totally random facts...
~I love glitz and grammar, hence my handle. ~I am a connoisseur of cotton candy. ~I drink hot chocolate no matter the weather or the season. ~I am a total nostalgia nut. I especially love old movies (think Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck) and old TV shows (I Love Lucy, Laverne & Shirley, The Golden Girls, Designing Women). ~My favorite holiday is Halloween. I frequently dress as mid-80s Madonna but have also transformed into Laverne DeFazio, a bumblebee, and a chocolate sandwich cookie. ~I am a consummate drama queen. For someone who's shy, this means writing plays, watching plays, and teaching theatre classes. (I suppose the teaching thing means I'm making a dent in overcoming my shyness, but I still haven't reached the point where I actually look forward to speaking in public.)
So as far as the whole shy thing goes... Well, let's face it. It stinks. Every year, I include the gift of gab on my holiday wish list, and every year it never comes. People mistake my shyness for snootiness. They think I'm Greta Garbo reincarnated - you know, that I want to be alone.
But I don't. I'm just no good at initiating conversation. I function just fine when someone else takes the lead, and I have plenty of scintillating stories to share, but I'm still a timid caterpillar struggling to achieve social butterfly status. It takes me awhile to relax around people, but once I feel comfortable with someone, then the wallflower shell starts to fall away and I get, dare I say it, chatty.
If you can relate, great. Maybe I'll make a friend or two who's in the very same boat. And perhaps we can get off this boat and onto the yacht.

Hello Allison and welcome to the board !!!
Yes, I can definitely relate. I am an old tv show connoisseur myself. I absolutely love Laverne & Shirley - I never missed it when it was on. I can definitely relate to Laverne a little more than I could relate to Shirley, but I liked them both. They were quite different in a lot of ways; and it was nice to see that even though they were different, they were best friends, and could live together, and not get on each other's nerves too too much, lol!
I used to write plays on my own (meaning: not a homework assignment) when I was in elementary/junior high school; so I can relate to this also.
I can be, at times "chatty" myself; so in that way, I believe we could be, as Anne of Green Gables would say "Kindred Spirits". Hope we hear more from you on here.
