Is anyone else familiar with it? I'm a bit hesitant to post this because it is a bit weird, especially if you're new to it. It's hard to explain what it is exactly. Here's how Wikipedia defines it: Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a neologism for a perceptual phenomenon characterized as a distinct, pleasurable tingling sensation in the head, scalp, back, or peripheral regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, olfactory, and/or cognitive stimuli. The nature and classification of the ASMR phenomenon is controversial. Tom Stafford, a professor at the University of Sheffield, says, "It might well be a real thing, but it's inherently difficult to research."If you'd like to read more here's the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_sensory_meridian_responseSo basically it's a tingly feeling you get when you experience "various triggers". A lot of people also claim it to be relaxing and can help ease anxiety and insomnia. Some people only experience the relaxation effects, while some experience only the tingles, others experience both, while others experience neither and just think it's creepy. Additionally different people have different triggers. Some examples of triggers include: whispering/softly speaking, various vocal noises, tapping/scratching sounds, role playing, etc. I know it sounds really weird but, I honestly feel like ASMR has helped me with my anxiety is some way. There are all kinds of asmr videos on youtube. Check it out if you'd like. If you do.. make sure to use headphones. Also make sure you have them on the correct ears (right side/right ear, left side left ear)as many of the people making these videos use binaural/mulit-directional microphones and the effect doesnt quite work the same if someone leans to you right side and you hear them in your left ear.. hehe

I've tried out a few, and though some of them are quite interesting, it doesn't have the same affect for me as it does for some who enjoy it. It's awesome that you were able to get some benefits from it!

I use asmr videos every day! Its a big part of my life. I get both the relaxation and the tingles depending on what sort of video I'm watching.
I think the videos really help when I need to de-stress, or if I'm feeling anxious, or just to relax before bed. I even listen to them while I work sometimes.
My favorite are binaural... well, anything really.
Thanks for making a thread on this Knox! It could be a big help for people who experience reactions to asmr videos.
Any suggestions for videos or channels I should check out?

Never heard of it.
Sounds incredibly dodgy. Someone on YouTube tells you something and it triggers a response...
Never trust strangers on the internet. It's like subliminal messaging or hypnotherapy. Never trust them.
Sounds really weird.
Wouldn't trust it, personally.

You're right, everyone has different triggers. I just checked out SofrlyGaloshes, not quite my cup of tea just because the video I looked at, she was making a lot of squishy sounds with her mouth, which although that's a trigger for a lot of people, it seems to have the opposite effect on me. Thank you though! I imagine ones favorite asmr artists can be a somewhat personal thing, so thanks for being brave enough to share.

My favorite are binaural... well, anything really. Thanks for making a thread on this Knox! It could be a big help for people who experience reactions to asmr videos. Yes! I'm glad that you started this thread, too, Knox. I've been wanting to make a thread on ASMR for like a year now, but I always chickened out. It's really cool to me that you guys feel ASMR videos help with your anxiety. I'm the same way: ASMR videos are one of the few things that actually help me relax when I get that "buzzy" anxious feeling for no reason. Like you, Karen, I watch them almost every day now, both at home and at work. I don’t get tingles, but I definitely get a special pleasure from watching certain things (like cooking shows or RRCherryPie videos) and hearing certain sounds. It’s one of those weird things where there just wasn't really a way to talk about this type of experience until recently. My favorite sounds involve tapping, scratching, and crinkling certain materials. There’s a textural element, for me: the material has to sound like something I would enjoy touching (like vinyl, for instance). I also like certain types of soft voices, especially when the pacing, emphasis, pronunciation, etc. is a little bit odd (which is apparently common). The first ASMR-specific video I saw was this “Virtual Spa” video that was linked from an article about ASMR, which mentioned the fact that many people found it weird/creepy. And she does speak in this weird, unnatural way--which is, of course, a big part of the appeal. My reaction, watching it, was basically, “wow, this IS weeeeird… …ly hypnotic.” And then I watched the whole thing and came away hungry for more. VeniVidiVulpes’ Virtual Spa (linked above) is still one of my favorites. I also really like her Crispy Soundscape. But my current favorite ASMRtist is GentleWhispering. I particularly like this video, where she presents handbags, but she’s got a lot of excellent role play-type videos, including a virtual haircut and one where she reads a pop-up book. The SOUNDsculptures channel also has some great binaural stuff, like " Your Head In A Box" (less murdery than it sounds). And I’ll just drop a link to this microphone brushing video (CosmicAsimar) and to this Virtual Spa & Sleep Centre video (asmrnovastar) that I just stumbled into tonight. What do you watch/listen to, Karen? I also have a negative reaction to a lot of "wet mouth sounds” a la SoftlyGaloshes. I’d go so far as to say I experience misophonia to some degree. Would you say the same? Knox—I’m curious whether you, too, have an aversion to particular sounds. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if misophonia and positive ASMR experiences tend to go hand in hand.

I can't really think of any sounds I've come across in an asmr video that I really dislike. Scissor sounds occasionally freak me out a bit for some reason. I know I'm obviously not going to get my ears cut off, but instinctually I still freak out. Oddly enough when I can get past that, scissor sounds do give me tingles. lol

Omgosh I loved your post Farouche! I actually discovered asmr through RRCherrypie's videos! All that lovely clicking and crinkling and what not! And I love cooking shows too. If you like interesting voices and cooking you might like to check out Maangchi she does these great cooking videos and she's Korean, so, interesting food, fantastic sounds and an interesting voice! I definitly prefer things like clicking, scratching, crinkling, microphone brushing, and some soft voices, some of my favorite asmr artists are: JustAWhisperingGuy Though, these videos are a mixed bag, I feel like I pass up about 10 un-interesting videos for one really good one. ASMRrequests Again some hit and miss with this lady, but for the most part I like her videos, they are usually creative and fun. She sometimes makes videos with those 'wet mouth sounds' but for the most part, awesome. MassageASMR This guy has an Australian accent, he does lots of pure sound videos, and you can usually choose the same video with him talking in it or with him silent, which I quite like, and I think thats something special he offers, so if you like a certain video for the sounds, but don't want to hear him talking through it, you can usually get that. thatASMRchick Yet another hit and miss artist for me, I can't seem to find any particular artists where I like all their videos, but maybe thats to be expected. ochikeron Another cooking channel! I really like her voice, she always sounds cheerful and interesting. Cooking with Dog another cooking channel, really really good! I just checked out the first asmr video you watched, (in fact I'm listening to it as I type this!) I have seen that channel before, I quite like her, she is very mesmerizing. I think thats one of the things I like about asmr, its sort of hypnotizing. But I also think thats why a lot of people are hesitant to talk about it, videos like that, (or really any asmr video), must seem strange to someone that doesn't feel anything from them. One of the first asmr videos I watched and one I still quite like is this I think your probably right in that misophonia and asmr go hand in hand, after all, if you're attracted to certain sounds more than the average person might be, then you'll probably dislike certain sounds more than the average. Oh! also, here is another one off video that is quite good.

Wow, I never knew there was name for that sort of feeling. Or at least thought to look it up! Certain unboxing videos always used to give me a certain 'feeling' that I couldn't describe, a warm satisfied glow, or cover me in tingles and feel extra sensitive. I have a few triggers I've since looked at after seeing this thread. Tapping is a big one for me, and is the sound of rain. I guess those two can be sort of related. Also, thunderstorms have always given me an all over tingle. I think that is a common one for a lot of people though. I did look at a scratching vid too, though sometimes it's hard tlinko switch off the critical side of my brain that's thinking 'this is weird....haven't you got something else to be doing?!' Those sensations can be so few and far between in real life, and vary from person to person. I'm glad Knox made the initial post and others have contributed as it's provided a source for me to go to that I previously hadn't even considered might exist. I must say though, personally, I could only lose myself in ASMR related sounds when I know I don't have commitments or have to go to work. Where I can fully relax and afterwards just be on my own. I can feel quite open and vulnerable in a way? I don't know if that's a common thing among you guys but I have felt a fair bit overwhelmed and sensitive to stimuli after listening to a few examples. Especially when I had to go to work and have to constantly interact with people for hours at a time (though I'm not overly keen on that anyway :S) The last one I viewed was DonnaASMR, who had some very good tapping videos and a very tingly scratching microphone one, if that's your thing. Some good unboxing ones too. She had the rain and thunderstorm vids I referred to as well. I liked ASMRrequests Time Travel Tuesday videos too. I think Karen already mentioned her. Love the Zelda one!

I feel the same about thunderstorms Slinky, and I think a lot of people can relate, the sound of rain relaxes most people and even puts lots of people to sleep. The only time I really enjoy thunderstorms is when I'm at home and know I don't have to go anywhere. Otherwise I'm just stressed about the possibility of having to drive on flooded streets! I checked out DonnaASMR yesterday, I liked her channel, I'll definitely be watching more of hers. The tapping videos I watched were great. I liked VeniVidiVulpes channel too, she has a very caring voice that absolutely appeals to me. I'm surprised and glad to see even four members of su who like asmr videos, it makes me think that they're more popular than I originally thought. After all, we're such a small community, if liking asmr videos was really very 'off the beaten path' then I would imagine almost no one here would have heard of it.
