This probably won't be of any use to anyone else, but I've been able to come out of my shell as I've gotten older through, firstly, going to college, then going to university. The college I went to was basically an extension of my high school, so I kept the majority of my old friends, saw them every day, and was in an environment where I felt I could voice my opinions and thoughts a little better. Uni helped as well in meeting new people on my course (Film and Media) with similar interests but diff. backgrounds. While some people (and teachers) at school made me feel a lot worse about being shy, there are others who I'm thankful I met. My friends, certain teachers (Sharpey especially, he knows who he is! ). I'm guessing my point is teacher, tutors, and especially good friends can have a massive bearing on the person you become, and while I'm still pretty shy, I'm glad I got to know these people when I did 'cause they helped me a lot. ;D
