I have a couple questions here: 1) What type of drinks don't give you hangovers? I thought they all did. 2) If you go out with your friends and dont want any alchohol (or get drunk), what could you order (a light drink or just a coke???) You could order an NA beer. I drink them all the time now. Some of them are quite tasty.

I just rarely ever drink, I'd rather smoke up something than drink alcohol. I guess because to me, drinking is something you do to quench your thirst, not get a buzz. So thinking of chugging down a gallon of liquor doesn't seem like a tasty idea to me. Also, just the way this thing you're drinking is going to make you sick to your stomach just seems gross.. I don't know why. I'll go to the bar with a friend and get a water while they order a beer lol. People tell me I should try it, that drinking is fun etc. etc., even the people who only have a beer or two. With those people I think it boils down to just a social thing. My question has always been.. WHY drink.. not WHY NOT. Am I weird? hehe

Why drink beer, when paint thinner is cheaper, better tasting, and gets you just as f'd up? ;D

I think a hangover is down to the body being dehydrated. Basically you piss out more liquid then you take in. So wine, spirits tend to dehydrate you more. Seems to be how it works for me anyway. Although it might just be you get more drunk alot easier. Either way just don't drink too much or drink water as well. Either between drinks or before you go to bed. I find drinking water helps me anyway. 2) Whatever you want. It's your life, your mouth, your drink. Well depending on what they have available.

The impurities in wines (especially red wines) and dark liquor (such as bourbon) contribute to hangover above and beyond the effect of the alcohol. This is from the Wikipedia article on hangovers:
Hangovers are multi-causal. Ethanol has a dehydrating effect (such substances are known as diuretics), which causes headaches, dry mouth, and lethargy. This can be mitigated by drinking plenty of water between and after the alcoholic consumptions. Alcohol is also a metabolic poison, and its impact on the stomach lining probably accounts for nausea.
Another factor contributing to hangover is the conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde by the liver by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. This metabolite is probably more toxic than alcohol.
Finally there are various nervous effects. The removal of the depressive effects of alcohol in the brain probably account for the light and noise sensitivity. It is also thought that the presence of other alcohols (such as methanol and fusel oils), by-products of the alcoholic fermentation also called congeners, exaggerates many of the symptoms; this probably accounts for the mitigation of the effects when distilled alcohol, particularly vodka, is consumed.
The amount of tannin in the drink may also have an effect. Red wines have more tannins than white wines, and some people note less of a hangover with white wine.
Some people believe that sugar (often found in sweet cocktails) worsens hangovers.
Nicotine poisoning can often worsen hangovers, as smokers tend to smoke much more than usual while under the influence of alcohol.
Genetics also plays a part, as some people seldom, if ever, suffer hangover symptoms no matter how much they drink.
The psychosomatic nature of hangovers shouldn't be ignored either. If people expect a hangover, they tend to feel one.

So I'm not yet the legal drinking age but I do enjoy bacardi and I know when to stop drinking (can't say that for some of the people I know). usually one, maybe one and a half is all I need to start to feel more social. Remember not to drink on an empty stomach.

I hear that too It makes me feel uncomfortable when I get asked that, it makes me feel like since I am not doing what other people are doing, I must be abnormal. I know thats not true but it makes me uncomfortable when idiots ask me that. Why drink is right!! ;D ~i.a.

Its cool that so many here don't feel like they have to drink. I wish I was more like that when I was younger. I don't drink much now.
But, on the subject of hangovers, the article Sushiboat cited pretty much covers it, but a rule of thumb is the clearer the alchohol, the less impurities, resulting in less of a hangover.

. Remember not to drink on an empty stomach. It's wierd, cause although I get drunk quicker on an empty stomach i'm much less likely to be sick which isn't like most people i suppose. Not that i'm sick a lot.

What I find really weird is that people who'd normally drink coke or irn-bru or something suddenly drink orange juice when they're driving.
It's like some wierd thing that if you're driving you have to drink orange juice.
Sorry i'm rambling, i'm ill and i'm bored.

I went out friday night and was totally miserable. Someone asked me if I was ok and I said "I'm still breathing if thats any help." As soon as I had a pint of lager I loosened up and felt better, started to engage in the conversation. At the end of the night, 3 pints + countless strawberry vodka's later I was back in my "WTF is wrong with me" frame of mind. I ended up having a conversation all about me - for about 2 hours. I do this all the time - whenever I've been drinking I MUST be the centre of attention and everyone must talk about me. I had a sore throat the next day, which is interesting as I hadnt been shouting like I normally do.

I'm like that, I get so loud and I always want everyone to be looking at me and everything. Normally I try to blend into the background quite a lot. I suppose it's cause you maybe don't get a lot of attention in real life,.
