I partially agree with Beckham being vastly hyped-up by the media, and the fact he (or to be more accurate, his wife) courts the press. But I still think he's an incredibly gifted guy and hype is a big part of sport now (rightly or wrongly). Wayne Rooney's situation is a different thing I think. The press put him on a (very high) pedestal which the public have latched onto, but they'll be ready to knock him off sooner or later (look at Owen). I'm sure if he could just play footy and be left alone by the press he would love it, but lets face it, that isn't going to happen.
Ok, just to shoot what I've just said down completely, here's my 'overhyped/overrated' list:
The White Stripes 50 Cent Brad Pitt Renee Zellweg....oh whatever. Feng Shui...agreed - it's just tidying up a bit isn't it? Robbie Williams - quite frankly, the U.S can have him. Gangs of New York All these goddamn boy/girl-bands, novelty records (Cheeky Girls..arrrgghh!!!)
See Shane? Didn't resort to the obvious rival footy team bashing! Oh, did I forget Thierry Henry? Only joking!

Oh, and reality show Big Brother. You can't go anywhere in the UK at the minute without people talking about it. The hype that goes into that show is something else. Although I have to admit I'm a sucker for it, as I've caught myself staring at the TV where the contestants are sitting around, doing bugger all.

Terry Henry (to give him his London name) is probably the best player in the world right now. Closely followed by Bobby Pires. I agree with you about Robbie Williams and Big Brother. I haven't watched it at all this year. I watched it the whole way through the year that Scouser builder won it but never again since.

Whenever I've watched Big Brother it seems to consist of people sitting around looking bored, and either saying nothing, or having what they say bleeped out.
Some overhyped people/things:
Radiohead (good but not that good); Luis Figo (occasionally brilliant but mostly peripheral); Tom Cruise (why is he highest earning male actor?); Comic books turned into films; rubbish children's tv programmes that people in their 20/30's hark back to because they were shown in THEIR childhood (excluding Bagpuss, Mungo and Midge and Mr Ben because of course these were great - and mildly psychedelic!)

I'm a big fan of the comic books turned into movies. I always loved superheroes. As a kid, comics were too expensive, though. Now, I don't get as much out of them as a good book. There've been some comic BOOKs made, but most are no-name authors, and probably suck.
I've been confused about 50 cent's popularity, too. I think most rappers suck, though. Along with most of the boy bands. I've not heard a lot of the girl bands, though, since I hardly ever listen to the radio or watch MTV--not that it plays music often.
I also don't understand the popularity of any of the un-reality shows. One where everyone is stuck in a house sounds particularly boring.

I wish I had taken an interest in comic book superheros as a kid. You always here about them being auctioned off for a massive amount of money. I wonder how much an edition of 'Wep Active Magaizine' will be worth in 50 years time?
I agree that Radiohead are overhyped. They're a bit too happy go luck for my like!

I wish I had taken an interest in comic book superheros as a kid. You always here about them being auctioned off for a massive amount of money. That idea caused a big problem in the 90's, or so. People were buying comics to collect(as opposed to reading them). Comic book companies were often printing four copies of a comic, because lots of people would buy all four. Eventually, people stopped this, but the companies now had these huge printing machines and other overhead for making lots of comics. So, the industry was hit really hard. Marvel comics almost went under--I think it DID file for bankruptcy. Marvel was probably the second biggest, although the other companies(excluding DC, which was probably #1) were pretty minor at the time. I just saw a history of comics on TLC or the History channel. Actually, I guess that's a problem caused by overhyping(the topic of the thread). LOL

I used to work with a fella who always used to buy 2 copies of every film he bought. One to watch and 1 to keep good in its cellophane wrapper. I never understood that.

Wow-wow, slow down there. Radiohead are not over-hyped, they are absolutely brilliant, IMHO of course. I love Radiohead, each album had its own completely original feel and they all bring out different emotions (albeit usually just varying degrees of loneliness but still). I think Radiohead music is loner music and great to listen to when alone (which i frequently am) and it often reflects my mood and somehow makes me feel better (this probably all sounds quite pretentious and strange i know). Well anyway i think they are class.
Here is what i think is overhyped
The Vines David Letterman Will and Grace Poetry (i personally cant stand most poetry) Pop Idol, Popstars, anything that starts with Pop The Matrix (frankly Keanu, i couldnt care less what "The Matrix" is) Eastenders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is what I think is over-hyped.
Brittney Spears 50 Cent Friends Reality shows
Reality shows are so boring and lame. Did anybody see that special on VH-I about reality shows? It was on about a month ago.
