Here's an interesting thread to start. What do yall think is the future of Russia and her people? Right now they are in a state of flux; they don't know exactly what direction they will take towards politics, and ever since the revolution of 1990 they have been searching for themselves. Right now, they are searching for a policy and direction to follow. Some say they will lean towards democracy. Some say they will lean back towards Russian conservatism, with their will and faith placed in the Orthodox church. This could be an interesting subject to talk about, i think.

I don't really know enough about Russia to comment. It seems for a long time that organised crime has taken over which has lead to disallusionment with democracy... if you can call an ex-KGB ruled country democratic... although can you ever call a media dominated country democratic? I dunno.. I hope Russia sorts itself out. It's a magnificent country with much to be proud of. As a european they are as instrumental in my freedom as Churchill or Japan waking a sleeping giant. Although I wish they would stop buying football clubs. Or at least if you are going to, buy someone like Plymouth Argyle. I mean Portsmouth? Psh. At least it shows money can't buy taste.

Organized crime is definitely a problem there. I'm not sure why, but the influential families under the Communist rule of the 2oth century are still predominantly powerful in Russia. They seem to have a lot of influence in directing the society and politics of the country. Putin is one such ex-KGB type that directs the politics of the country. My concern is that eventually Russia will return to their traditional policies of repelling all foreign influences, and everything not Russian in origin. This kind of thing has happened several times before, and extreme conservatism in a region has always run true to form.

I hope that Russia manages to stabalize its democracy and economy so that, eventually, it can begin negotiations to join the European Union. The addition of Russia would cement the EU as a global superpower, and allow it to act as a global counterweight to the US and and the growing power of the third world (China).

My professor and i always constantly talk about Russia; he goes there for conferences all the time, and i often drive them to the airport and back. Seems to me that Russia is doing very poorly at the moment; they have a big mafia/class system running the country right now, much like when it was under the Politburo structure with Socialism. But now the Politburo and its structure is gone. So the country is rapidly devolving into a more primitive system, where the rich families control everything. Putin is in control right now, but who knows for how long? I don't see democracy working over there at all. If anything, i see them returning to an absolutist system, one much more reactive and more traditionally Russian.
