We are not "pre-programmed" with these things so to speak. Note: Neural networks are not pre-programmed. After creating one, you train it and it learns. (Just like brains - which are, for the most part, not pre-wired with cognition).

You know, I'm gong to start buzzing anyone who makes a statement as if it's a fact... Hmm... Maybe, to subdue brutal fact-like statings, people should only prefix lines that are facts as <FACT> or some such. That way we can basically ignore everything and know that no one is making any statements of <FACT>. It really does suck when people are like... None of us know anything. ItemXYZ is and that's that.

I don't know about anyone else but do you have a hard time imagining your consciousness ending after death? Maybe it seems self centered, but seeing as throughout your whole life you are seeing the whole world through your own perspective I don't think it is really. I think that's one reason why I can't shake the idea of some sort of existence beyond the physical, because I have a hard time imagining the consciousness just ending.

i think its just like when you go to sleep and don't have any dreams except you never wake up you can't imagine it yet it happens almost every night Y'know, sometimes sleep is the highlight of my day. The way I see it, one way or another it can't be that bad. Well, once the dying part is over anyway. Still hard to imagine the never waking up part in regards to it being like sleep.

In my opinion, consciousness is an awareness of physical surroundings/logic/scientific/the explainable.
You then have a subconscious, which is repsonsible for intuition/emotion/spiritual/the unexplainable.
I believe it is through your subconscious that can pick up on how other people's consciousness (in answer to jaeksmith's question). In your subconscious you can 'read' others emotion/body language/facial expression.
Consciousness, or logic, I believe is something masculine and subconsciousness, or emotion, is something feminine. (I'm not being stereotypical. I'm just expressing my pagan views.. i'll give more information if you want! ;D).
To prove what i'm saying you can see that not many of us girlies have posted in this thread, probably because an explaination of consciousness would be logical/scientific.

Uh, well back when this thread started, Stranger and I had a rather drawn-out PM discussion about the nature of consciousness, and one of us is a girl (that would be me). It was like, totally logical 'n' stuff!
