He's ones of those rich famous people who can make a simply addicting show and books that is pointless and make millions of people watch it everyday and make tons of cash off of it. Each famous person out there has something that feeds money to them. Helping others is his fortune.

Of course he's making money off people. Nothing wrong with that. But he's also created a show that taps into peoples' feelings, and so they feel inspired to watch him. His show thereby gets very good ratings, and so makes him a shit load of money in the process.

Yes, all talk show hosts are making money from people's insecurity. That includes the viewers' too.

From what I've seen of Dr. Phil, he seems pretty useless. Of course to some extent he helps people get in touch with their feelings, but how much can you do in an hour long show? It seems like all he really says is "I'm going to pay for you to have long term therepy" or "You need to relax more: I'm giving you a special vacation to the Bahamas."
Perhaps the therepy will help his "clients" but what kind of hope does it give to the millions of people, who can't afford that kind of thing, who watch his show? It seems to me that Dr. Phil's main message is "Money will solve all your problems."
Perhaps he feels good about the fact that his show is helping the select few who have problems that are entertaining enough to be publicly broadcast, but it seems obvious that his main drive is the money and fame. If not, I agree that he would definately put his time to better use, though not necessarily at SU.

You're not listening. From a ratings' point of view, he's a genius. Think about it; you hate his guts right? But he makes you feel; he inspires annoyance and irritation in you, right? Controversey creates cash as far as tv goes. The more a celebrity is hated, the better their ratings are. People watch him no matter if they like him or hate him.

His show is there to make people feel, not to solve their problems. People are fascinated with their pain, after all. We agonize over it, no pun intended.

You're intelligent enough to realize that, Pea. But just look at Dr. Phil's ratings, and you'll realize he has a profound hynoptic effect on his viewers.
