Review of Star Trek Vanguard, Bk #3: Reap the Whirlwind. By David Mack. Commodore Reyes has dispatched the USS Sagitarius, a small scout ship, to the Jinoteur System. This system attracts an unusual amount of attention, for every sign and sensor shows that it is completely artificial and man-made, not by natural forces. Starfleet and the Klingons rush to lay claim to the system, thus provoking the Shedai into action. The Shedai Wanderer marshalls her allies to defend their Jinoteur system, which they call the First World, and for good reason. Unknown to the others, secrets about the Tholians' past are revealed, as well as their connection to the Shedai. Turns out the Tholians have more reason than anyone to bury the Shedai and their powers. But though the Shedai are more powerful than all the three foes combined, they are not of a piece. The Shedai splinter into two factions; the one centered around the hostile leaders, and the other group centered around the more insightful ones. Taken all this together, the crews of the Sagitarrius, Endeavour, and even the Klingons bite off way too much than they can chew.
