What are some simple, healthy ways to improve mood or alleviate mild depression?
I'll start with: exercise (which I don't do much of)

Thanks for the good ideas, Karen and Mujimoo. And welcome to SU, Mujimoo! I said "healthy" just to exclude things like junk food, alcohol, drugs and the like. There are lots of unhealthy "quick fixes" I'm sure. Specific or general suggestions welcome.

I find watching a comedy or cartoon cheers me up. Humor is a really good way to improve mood. There are a few websites I visit that I often find to be hilarious. ;D Randomly, I saw a quote today from a recent episode of the TV show Supernatural: "I was drunk, it was Comic Con." "We've all been there." I was giggling to myself over that this morning. Maybe because I know of someone who went there (comic/fantasy convention in San Diego, California) and I saw the pictures. (I don't want to be a hypocrite- I'm not encouraging the behavior in the quote!)

Exercise hasn't ever seemed to do much for me. That might be because I exercise 6 days a week though.
Taking a long drive on a road headed away from the city with the radio turned up always makes me feel better.

Yes! Sometimes I just really need to get in my car and drive. And sure enough, once I've figured out where I'm going I feel much better.

...reading online Things That Make You Happy/Smile Lists. Reading through them will make you smile either because they're good ideas or you'll be scratching your head at some of them. I wonder how they came up with some of these... And this:If it were as easy as walking outside, I wouldn't need to read a List of Things That Make Me Smile for ideas. I actually think this is a good one:

Exercise has been one of the best methods I've found that improves my mood, although it has to be a decent, strenuous exercise.

A really nice warm shower usually hits the spot whether I am crying my eyes out or being angry as bees having the hives whacked.....and the added bonus of smelling pretty good is the proverbial cherry on top of something deliciously nice.

You know this actually helps me too. Not so much being in the shower but afterwards - it's having that clean feeling.

I like the shower idea. I was feeling very uptight earlier (had made a mistake here and was literally physically running up and down the hall to try to rectify it - what a sight to see that was ,unfortunately (or fortunately? lol) I didnt' record it lol. After I got the problem solved, I was still pretty nerved up, had made some supper, but lost my appetite. So I decided to take a quick bath. That helped - a bit. lol. Other things that help me is:
Playing the guitar and singing going for a walk (as others have mentioned) just making up stuff (stories, songs, or especially jokes) working on something technical - whether electronics or something on the computer I'd probably sew something (but I just don't have the eyes for it anymore, very taxing that way for me, unfortunately) knitting (don't have any needles or yarn at the moment though) playing solitaire doing active housework such as vacuuming or other cleaning (when I'm not fatigued) jogging in place at home with headphones playing upbeat pop music such as 80s (duran duran, tears for fears, abc, or other stuff, lol): did that July or August 2011 and felt great afterward. Haven't done it since - LOL!!! Brainstorming about unimportant things (so as not to add to a bad mood) instead of things that might stress me out more (til my mood is better, and then work on the more important things to problem-solve) If you have a friend that can take teasing, go see him or her and tease them about something silly or unimportant. What I do is: if I see someone around the place here, I tease them (another lady here) about silly things or I poke them in the side or tickle them (she's really good natured and doesn't mind my teasing that way, lol) Listening to calming things like ocean waves and other type sounds. Listening to a cat's purr - now that's calming. I have Pepper's purr finally recorded with that cellphone camera/vid thingy I mentioned in my first post, and I listen to that often with the headphones. I stick 'er in vlc and put the audio thing on "headphones" and fiddle with the bass controls in its equalizer (or whatever) and get as much bass as I can. What a motor!!! - lol. That thing can really relax a person!!! lol. Her purr makes me happy:).
