Hello all! I have just been reading your posts and feel that I have to give you all some hope. I have been labelled 'quiet' all my life right back from my school reports to today in the office. I was so depressed at one stage my hair fell out! However, this has not stopped me having friends, boyfriends, getting married, getting jobs, backpacking around places like Guatemala, meeting famous people or even jumping out of a broken down cable car onto a mountain ledge! Please don't give up. It's all out there for the taking

It's odd - I've been backpacking round Europe several times without the slightest hint of trepidation, yet until recently I was too scared to talk to work colleagues!
In some ways my shyness hasn't held me back at all, but in others it's been crippling.

HEY... I AM LESS SHY IN ANONYMOUS SETTINGS...
What do you think this means?
I am sure there is some psychological reason for it.

I think it's because in an anonymous setting you don't care what people think. It's a bit like being abroad. You don't know anyone and they don't know you and so you are less likely to be judged?

So true! I was painfully shy growing up and all the way through college. I am married after dating allot of women. I too am more comfortable around those I know but who isn't? Probably 99.9% of the people you ever meet are not going to bite you and many do have shy tendencies, but hey! everyone likes to talk to another if the subject has interest. Yes, people are busy in their lives with this or that but they do have time to talk. As a former very shy person who has overcome so much, if I can do it, the rest of you can too. I am still shy in some situations but this really is probably more due to lacking self confidence and this is gained by going out and forcing myself to not be afraid and talk to people.
