I want to know if there are any social rules for who you say hello to. If you are passing someone, do you only say hello to them if they are close friends, casual friends, people you have met, people who are in your classes? Up until now I have not even said hello to anyone, even people I know. When I started college in September, quite a few people would say hello to me as I passed them in the corridoor, but I always pretended I couldn't hear them, or I gave an awkward smile. This eventually led to people saying nothing to me, and me being like a ghost, with no one acknowledging my presence. I always feel really guilty when I have passed someone I know briefly, and I have said nothing. It is like I am using bad manners, or being rude, is that what it is? What do normal people do, do they say hello to everyone, or just certain people?

I'm very shy myself when it comes to greetings. I will wait until they say hello first, before saying anything. With the exception of close friends,which only includes 2 people(then I would probably be first to greet them) I don't think not replying is rude, there's sometimes that I don't reply to some one or just smile at them, because I know not saying anything will keep me from having to have a conversation. Most of the time though, I do try to say hello

I've had this problem. After awhile some people ignored me, because I ignored them. Now if I have trouble speaking up I just give them some kind of look of recognition and keep walking.

Walking across campus and meeting someone coming toward you is a bit scary. You could take the attitude, I'll say hello to them then they will wonder who I am? Or if they speak to you, you could nod, wave or wink.
Who knows, maybe they are shy too and trying to say something?
Or as they approach you, you turn around and go another direction but you might run into someone else coming from another direction? ;D
Question..."what do normal people do...."....how do you classify normal?

i am pretty shy my self. i dont really go up and say hi to people. i only have a few friends that i do.

Greetings are tough. I usually just smile, nod, and wave. Just the slightest acknowledgement should do the job.

I usualy only say hello if someone greets me first.
