When my dad died, my mum and one of my brothers were given diazepam and I took one pill the day of the funeral to try and help me as I was altarserving at the actual funeral. I found it calmed me alot so I guess it would be pretty helpful to shy people because I know myself that in social situations sometimes I panic and can't control my breathing to well and just feel really anxious; I think someone else on this board has mentioned dizaepam as well, i'm not sure.

To answer the question, I haven't taken medication due to my shyness, I don't really need to as i'm not chronically shy, I am shy but I have enough confidence in me to get by if you know what I mean. I use to drink Alcohol for "dutch courage" but I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I am on medication. It is not for shyness though. I am on medicine because I am schizoid-affective/bi-polar type. That basically means that I am schizophrenic and bi-polar.

Let's see...I was on paxil for awhile for my social anxiety (and depression and general anxiety). Then I was on zoloft, primely for depression and also anxiety. Now I'm on prozac and buspar, for both depression and social anxiety. This combination has worked WONDERS for me. I actually have friends at school now! *beams with pride*
P.S: When I say 'anxiety' I also mean OCD. FUN!

St Johns Wort is natures prozac. It is a herbal remedy, it is often called the sunshine herb because it helps you to feel happy. You should try it. In germany, it is prescribed 10 times more than anti depressants. it is for depression. may help social phobia and shyness too. it is very gentle, need to take it for a long time. the effects build up so you have to keep taking it, you may realise the benefits without even realising it. be patient. trust that it is going to work. it doesnt mask the problem. it solves the underlying cause. you can get tablets, capsules, tinctures. ST JOHNS WORT IS MORE EFFECTIVE, DOESNT HAVE UNPLEASANT SIDE EFFECTS AND DOESNT STRESS YOUR BODY. HERBALISM. GET CAPSULES FROM HOLLAND AND BARRETT.
WARNING THOUGH: DONT TAKE ST JOHNS WORT IF YOU ARE TEXT

I'm going to try St. Johns Wart. I remember hearing about it a few years ago and it somehow slipped my mind. I'm definitly going to get some tomorrow though. I've always wanted to take something for my social phobia but I'm not too keen on medicating myself. Maybe St. Johns Wart will do the trick.

I've tried on Remeron, Zoloft, Paxil, and one or two others for social anxiety(shyness)/depression. Paxil seemed to work the best. It did seem to curb my libido. That was nice, though, since I was so rarely with any women. So, the effect was that I didn't have to bother with taking care of myself everyday. Sex is fun, and I'd have sex all day. Masturbating is just time consuming. Now, I don't have a job, so I can't afford to be healthy. A BIT off topic, though. I know that the different anti-depressants for anxiety work on people in different ways. For example, I understand that Prozac would probably have a negative effect on my shyness. If St. John's Wort is like Prozac, it might be wise to talk to someone who knows more of the specifics of how the herbs work than "St. John's Wort helps depression/social anxiety".
