I'm taking Paxil right now, and it's helped me a lot. It won't turn you into an outgoing person, but for me it did take away a lot of the physical symptoms of anxiety--the tightening in the chest and muscles before I have to do something like talk to someone I don't know well, stuff like that--and it generally relaxes me and I'm able to talk to people more easily. I've been diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder, not just SA, so this also helps feel less stressed when something happens like the me being stuck in traffic. My anxiety level used to be through the roof, but now I just take it in stride. I didn't notice any sexual side effects but it does make me sleepy (so I take it at night) and my appetite is decreased.

I understand that paxil is helping you. Have you gained your weight after the start of paxil. I started cipralex but it is not helping. I want to switch to paxil if it does not increase weight.

I started zoloft it helped me with social anxiety. But zoloft keeps me awakening at night. My sleep was much reduced and I discontinued the same. Now I am thinking to start paxil, provide it does not increase weight. Any body can help me

But now that I think about it, yeah it helps for that too. I still avoid situations and all that, but I think I'm less anxious when I have to be in them. Doesn't effect my sleep, but I do have less of an appetite.

I took zoloft off and on for years. Yes, the majority of these do have sexual side effects in that it is difficult for men to get an erection and for women it takes forever to orgasm.
I am taking Lexapro now and it seems to work ok. I am much less anxious overall and much less depressed overall.
I had a temporary loss of appetite and sex drive but both seem to be back. ;D

I haven't found a shy medicine that works for me. I'm too shy to ask for it. Just kidding. I took Effexcor for several months, but i don't think it helped me any. Yes, it did have some real strong sexual side effects for a while too. I had practically no sexual desire at all.

i am surprised noone has mentioned aggression as a side effect. I have never taken medication but have studied them in school . My brother was on antidepressants as an adolescent and he had aggression as a side effect as with many medicated adolescents.

i read somewhere that Prozac could help, so i asked my brother if be could get some from his doctor (he's on meds for bipolar disorder), he said no. i'm kind of disappointed. yeah, i know i shouldn't be looking for an 'easy way out' of a personality problem

Does anyone else here use SAMe? I take 400mg/day for my social anxiety and find it to be very effective. The only side-effects I've noticed are that I laugh and smile a lot more. It seems to make me more resilient to stress and reduces the severity of both my anxiety and depression. It is somewhat expensive though as my insurance does not cover it. However I think it is worth the cost due to its effectiveness and absence of major side-effects.
As always, you should check with your doctor before using it.
