"smartness sucks"- i agree. i've always been a good student, pretty smart, etc. but guess what? it doesn't matter what your I.Q. is. what is more important is satisfaction with life. and that has little or nothing to do with intelligence. so why does "smartness suck"? here are some reasons from my personal life: 1. everyone expects more from you. "You NEED to go to college.", biggest lie i ever heard. 2. you can see what's going wrong around you, but it's out of your power to fix it. "Wait, don't throw that in the fire! it's going to EXPLODE!" uhoh, too late... 3. people are more critical when you make mistakes. "You mean you couldn't figure that out?" remember that episode of the Simpsons where Homer finds out he has a crayon stuck in his brain and once he removes it he's smart, but then he doesn't like being smart? sometimes i want a crayon. if you consider yourself to be not-so-smart, your not missing much. I totally agree what others are saying about different kinds of intelligence. i know some people who are very slow, mispell everything, barely graduate high school, but they think about things differently and are every bit as intelligent as a straight A student. but happieness is far more important. anybody can be happy.

These days you pretty much need a degree. You have so many more opportunities with one than without. I doubt the teens that you know who are slow, misspell everything, and barely graduate are every bit as smart. What makes them smart? There is book learning and common sense. Plenty of people can get through school but if they have no common sense or lack initiative, then they probably aren't going to get too far in life. I think what you are saying is the smarter you are, the more expectations others have of you in life and that is true. On the job it isn't wise to volunteer how much you know as it usually just means heaps of additional work at no extra pay.
