These are dead end conversations. You say "I like the music" He says "yea"...Silence... And no guy likes to talk about clothes. Men don't take forever to pick out clothes like girls do, his mom probably bought it, or it was on the top of the pile of clean clothes, whatever, he won't want to discuss fashion with you. be careful now, that's a stereotype. there are quite a few guys who are very much into fashion. and quite a few women who aren't. also, i'd have to disagree about the music. i've gotten into many many long conversations about music that began with just such a simple comment. what kind of conversational topics would you suggest? what has worked for you? share! Yes it is a stereo type that men don't like fashion. But its based on some amount of truth. What would I talk about? Well, I'd just avoid talking to people until a topic JUMPED out at me just begging to be discussed. I've, unfortunatly started some pretty dull convos with men and then been like dying while talking as I realize that if he ever did like me, I've bored him so much that he doesn't anymore.

Of the few conversations I've ever had with guys they were over music or cars, and they seemed to be good topics.
But then all of these conversations turned to their real ulterior motive of how to get infromation from me about my sister (her cell phone number, or if she was currently dating anyone), since she was a popular girl at school.

Here's the secret, gals; Sports! There are few men out there who aren't into some kind of sports. Even yours truly Mr. Russ likes football, baseball, and wrestling. And, if he doesn't like sports, this is also indicative. If not into sports, he's usually into more solo type activities, like computers or collecting. All in all, just try not to make him uncomfortable. Shy men avoid uncomfortable type stuff.

Maybe they were also trying to get info about you too, HM. After all, you and your sister are related, and to know one is to also know the other.

awww...now, see? there's always a catch! some complication to screw things up...sigh... Ouch, that hurts. That's happened to me before too. I hate cell phones. More than anything they tend to kill privacy and distract people from what they're doing.
