On another thread (on doing your part to be part of a group), I mentioned my total disgust with how it is in life, that from the first grade, right on up to the end of your life, when you are in a group, you are expected to bring money into the group, by selling things.
I think a lot of the Shy United membership also feels this way, and, many people I have discussed it with, in person, have voiced the same feelings as me.
I started seeing a counsellor, who I thot was sympathetic, and told him how disgusted I was that whenever you joined a club, you were expected to sell things, saying in my most adamant voice of indignation and disgust:
"I DON'T WANT TO SELL ANYBODY, ANYTHING !!!"
A very gentle look came across the counsellor's face, and he said, in a very gentle voice:
"You don't want to sell Jesus to people?"
Well, that one really came out of left field. I never would have expected such a response, and I was totally speachless.

I think I would have walked straight out of the room after I'd gotten over being speechless...can't really think of any other way to respond to something like that...can't reason with those kinds of people, just avoid them.

Reminds me of the story about the guy who asks you if you could have dinner out with anyone who ever lived throughout the history of the world, who would it be?
You think and think, lots of great choices. Finally, you think of someone and answer. Then, the guy nails you, "You mean it wouldn't be Jesus?"
I am a Christian, by the way, but I am the first to admit there are people out there who bring shame to our faith, and are responsible for its negative reputation.

What does that mean sell Jesus to people? Encourage people to become Christian? I don't understand what exactly happened. you go to a councellor and complain about how people only want you in their clubs so you can bring in money and she gives you a response like "I guess that means you don't think people should love Jesus". Thats just like what huh?

um.. what the hell does that have to do with anything? only scenario i can think of to make your counsellor look remotely sane is he/she thought you were talking about christian/church groups.. if that isnt the case your counesllor should seek some counselling himself/herself... hehe

Man, is that ever a loaded question. Thanks a lot. I don't minister to people, although sometimes I feel like I should. Someday, Jesus may ask me why I didn't, y'know? Frankly, I know one person with whom I would like to broach the subject, but don't know how to go about it. I make a lousy minister, eh? So what about you, Bill? Are you a Christian, and you have trouble ministering?

the Christians who have impacted my life witnessed by example, not by words. i was impressed with the manner in which they conducted their lives. i watched them and learned from them. i've never been swayed by anyone who tried to sell me anything. like the old sayings go - talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words. i try to follow the advice in Matthew 6 and tend to distrust those who go about loudly proclaiming their faith. self-promotion is a very common failing amongst professed Christians i've found.

Are you a Christian, and you have trouble ministering? Arizona, I have told you my story privately, so you really don't have to ask me, but since I have also told it on another message board, I'll re-tell it here. When I was in the 7th grade, I watched a Billy Graham Crusade on TV, and realized that There is a hell down below, and we are all going to go (curtis mayfield song lyric), but the Good News is that we can get saved from going to hell. And, I sure did get saved after Billy helped me to realize that I needed to get saved. But, I did NOT want to Sell Jesus to people way back then, any more than I want to sell Jesus to people today. That counsellor was looking for an opening to try to Sell Jesus to me, I would think. If I had simply replied, "No," he would have followed that up with "Have you Gotten Saved? If you have Gotten Saved, you should want to Sell Jesus to other people, so they can Get Saved too."
