This post will be pretty redundant... I agree with most of what's already been said. Overall impression: I really like the new look. Much better than the last upgrade, when all they did was add weird gradients the section headers.
Pros:
Cons:
One more pro: the redesign is bringing SUers together! Awwww.
Pros:
- The new search feature. Finally it's easy to sift through old posts!
- The fact that I can switch to bold and italics by hitting ctrl + B or i instead of having to use HTML tags. This forum had me so well trained that I've caught myself using the i and b tags to write emails and word documents a few times.
- Attachments--didn't even notice this till Stranger's post, but that is so very useful!
- The new avatars. It's nice to have an in-forum option for those of us who are too lazy to upload something. It's also neat to have a vague idea of what people look like in real life. I do wish there were more options, though. The noses are all kinda weird, and I could've sworn that there was only one normal-looking style for longish hair--although just now I saw another one, and I immediately made it mine.
Cons:
- The soulless new smilies, definitely... Maybe we can host ALL of the old ones on ImageShack--like Marle did with the old ;D face--and just use those instead.
- The revamped Most Recent Posts feature. I keep getting confused and thinking that Most Recent Posts is just a weird thread full of non-sequiturs (not like that would be so unusual...), or that real, normal threads are Most Recent Posts that happen to read like a conversation.
- The broken Preview. Scotty pointed out that hitting "Preview" actually just fixes the text box so you're not typing white-on-green... Hopefully that means it's just a temporary bug. I hate that I can't tell what things will actually look like until after I post.
- The way quotes look. Just messy, with the tinified avatars squished in there.
- All the new "social" features. I don't hate them... Although I do hate them on most websites, in part because I don't use any of the social media stuff that would make them useful, but mostly because the number of "likes" does affect my perception of the liked thing, and I'd rather be free to evaluate each comment on its own merits rather than its popularity. (I can't not look at the likes, either, because it's often a pretty reliable way to find the "best" comments on most sites. It's too convenient--too easy to rely upon! Even on sites where a majority of posters reliably like stupid things, the "likes" are a good indicator of how angry I should be...) But on a site like this, well... I find them more useful and fun in this context, but I'm kind of opposed in principal. A lot of shybies stress out enough about how their posts are being received. Every now and then we'll see a new thread go un-replied-to for a few days, at which point the OP returns to inquire WHY DO YOU ALL HATE ME? Now it's going to be, "no one EVEN 'liked' my post!" "I followed someone but they didn't follow me back!" ...So I haven't decided if/how I'll use all those features, yet. It's like Sigh said (jokingly, I know): "Should I be worried that no one likes this?"
