Almost everyday this summer I've been applying and searching for jobs. So far I've gotten two interviews and failed both. I just can't stay calm and answer the questions. The questions are fairly simple and yet I tend to mumble and forget words. I think at some point in the interview I end up lying a bit, but I didn't intend to do that. Ugh, what am I gonna do next time? I have another interview next week. ; - ;

Download a whole bunch of common interview questions and practice reading and answering them yourself in front of the mirror. That always worked well for me.

Thanks, I think that might help. I did rehearse for the previous interview but just in my head. I'll try the mirror thing this time. But I think just meeting them alone gets me, especially if I have to make eye contact with them. I think they can see me trembling then I start to lose focus on the conversation.

Interviewers know that people will be nervous in front of them, and unsure how to respond. What helps is to be familiar with the questions they might answer, and your responses to their questions. Smile a lot, too. Even if you seem goofy doing it, this seems to do the trick and help charm the interviewers, especially if they're American and expect you to be happy all the time. I've been to dozens of job interviews in the last several years, and it gets easier the more you do it.

especially if they're American and expect you to be happy all the time. Insufferable country.

especially if they're American and expect you to be happy all the time. Insufferable country. Hey, I'm an American too. I just know that American employers actively seek out positive, outgoing, and energetic associates to work with them, not just good and competent ones. Shy people are not known for these traits, but we can fake it until we make it.

I understand employers wanting positive people, especially at a job interview.
I do think this country can be more difficult though for an introvert, or someone who doesn't smile all of the time - so I've heard.

Phew, I think the interview went okay. : ) I'm not sure if my answers were good enough, but they said that I asked good questions at the end. I couldn't smile but I was able to make eye contact. In the past interviews, I can feel my mouth shaking when I smile... So I just try to be genuine because I don't want them to expect a different person if they do hire me. The job is an environmental restoration sort of work, so there's no customer service stuff.

I've conducted and been on alot of interviews. The best advice i got from one of my previous managers was to go on as many interviews as possible. Even if you didn't want to work at a place still go because its all about practice and repetition. I've driven as far as 4 hours away for interview. My second to last interview i went on was 3 hours away and did well but didn't get the job. My friends asked why i would go that far and that it was a waste but three months later i interviewed for a similar position locally and got a job offer that day because i had already been through them once and new what expect.
