Whether I did or not is another question but my explanation to him must have sounded convincing

I thought it was almost fantastic. I liked it because it was really out there, I loved the characters, and it had a wonderful mix of creepy, cool, emotional, and funny, along with a deep story. But, as ashamed as I am too to admit it, I would never have understood it without having someone explain what the hell happened. And unfortunately, that someone was director Richard Kelly. I don't remember exactly what it was now, but I remember his commentary left me thinking it was a bit too magical. I don't mean the whole tangent universe thing; I totally dig that. It might've been the way whole town was supposed to be "guiding" Donnie toward his fate. Not only did I find that unfulfilling (if they knew, or even suspected, why not tell him?...), but it was also far too subtle for me. I think I'd've liked it better if it was more like a puzzle that Donnie had worked out on his own. Indeed, that may be a common interpretation. I do like how it left a lot open to interpretation. Heh, if I'd've heard the explanation from someone other than the director, I might have nothing but a glowing review to give. I'm probably still missing a lot too. It sucks; I'm terrible at interpreting art, yet when someone clues me in I often end up loving it.

I remember watching one night/morning on Hbo at about 3:00am. I was up writing a research paper due the next day. I thought the movie was strange but good.

I thought it was fantastic. An interesting, original story at a time where that is something that is hard to come by. I like how the movie makes you wonder whether Donnie actually has something supernatural going on with him or maybe he really is just a schizo. I kind of don't care about any "official" interpretation of the movie, I feel mine and any someone else has for themselves is just fine.

it's not just all teh supernatural thing as well though. There's so many social issues, like the teacher who really cares, and the guy patrick swazye plays, and the whole middlesex, middleclass idea. The outcast girl. Theres' so much in it.

I really liked Donnie Darko--so weird, and the characters were pretty believable as people... I have that movie somewhere in my room. I must find and watch it!
Like a bunch of people have also said, I liked it so much more once I understood what was actually going on, lol. There's a Wikipedia entry on the movie that is really great--the experience of finding out the unspoken intricacies of the plot was almost as good as actually watching the real thing. Maybe that's weird, for a movie to be that esoteric that you need a website to explain it, lol; but I think it worked alright for me.
So indeed: good myooveh!
