So yesterday I was swimming at my town pool (I try to go twice a week), and there were these two old ladies in the lane next to me. Well, no sooner did I complete my first lap when I hear, in a loud crabby voice, "Why do you have to splash so much? NOBODY swims like that!"
I couldn't even bring myself to respond, or even look at them. I tell you, I was so upset I wanted to get out of the pool and go home, but I figured I'd only draw more attention to myself if I did that. Thankfully, I was eventually able to move into another lane further away from them.
Not only that, but these ladies weren't even swimming, just standing in the pool yakking away and every ten minutes walking from one end to the other.
As if that wasn't bad enough, last night I was chatting with a long-time online friend and told her about this incident. She laughed hysterically and told me this was the funniest thing she'd heard in ages. I tried very hard to convey the fact that I was crushed and humiliated by the whole thing and did NOT in any way find it amusing. She just kept on laughing, adding that "I can just picture you getting all upset". Then she said she was going to be "going to bed giggling tonight".
With friends like that.............

I have to say Michael, I found it hilarious as well. I can understand the effect it had on you but it is funny.

it's not funny because of you, Michael. it's funny because of the crabby old people (in my opinion). when you swim, you splash. you're supposed to. people are so stupid. you shouldn't have been embarrassed.. though, i wouldn't have known what to say in that situation either. one time, this guy yelled at me at my job and said he was going to get me fired. i was so embarrassed and i really wanted to cry, but one of our regulars came up and made me feel a bit better. also made me realize that all that guy did was make himself look like an ass. which is really what the woman that said that to you was doing.

What, were the old ladies in the pool afraid of getting wet?

What, were the old ladies in the pool afraid of getting wet? ;D ;D ;D If that were me, I would have wished that the drain in the pool would suddenly open up and suck me in. I can understand where you are coming from. Old crabby ladies However, it IS just a little bit funny. I haven't swam laps in so long I bet I would be loud and splashy about it too. If you ever see them again, do a big cannonball right next to them for me.

I suppose it's funny in retrospect, and if you're the type of person who has a whole lot of self-confidence I can see where this situation wouldn't bother you. However, I have a very hard time as it is getting criticized, and it's far worse when it's done in a very cruel manner. It hurts me and I feel embarrassed and upset. That's why it really ticked me off when my friend couldn't control her laughter for even a second to reassure me.
As for the "cannonball" suggestion, several people have already suggested that one to me. And much as I love seeing revenge served, it'd be just my luck that the old ladies would scream at the lifeguard and I'd be the one to get yelled at for it!
