Sometimes I feel that way at parties and similar social events. I think it's because, as much as I'd like to overcome shyness, I can only handle new situations in short doses; otherwise, I feel overwhelmed. But there's nothing wrong with starting out slowly - how else can you start out? I have found this to be true for me as well. I have read that socially anxious people tend to get "exhausted" quicker by social interaction. I don't want to be alone, I want to hang, but when it comes to hanging out with others I can only handle a couple of hours. Weird, I know. But I guess that's alright as long as you make it a point to spend time with others, no matter how long it is for.
