Ok...just a thought.
I saw the penpal ads and I noticed that most write more than 2 lines, which more or less contain "hey, I'm looking for penpals, email me at ....."
I think it's better to write something more. Next to age or name, interests, what kind of music or sport you like, tv, books..your social situation. A little more about yourself.
It is more personal and less random. I used to only reply to ads when I knew what sort of person I was writing and i had the impression they liked to write. That is just my opinion though.

I see what you mean. I don't think I put out a lot of info about me when asking for penpals. Which probably caused me to get less replies. I'm very bad at describing myself though so that's kind of a problem

Let's face it, if you want a penpal ask and you will get maybe one or two replies. Why put your life "history" in and either scare a prospective penpal away or keep it simple and have the penpal inquire? A bit of mystery makes it a bit more fun, you know!

True Bob, this you won't get much replies here in the first place. But at "regular" penpal sites it is not much different either. You don't have to put your life history, but a little more might be nice. Example, if you write you like animals, you can ad a line which animal you are keen at and perhaps if you have a pet. That will increase the size of your ad, without giving away the things you want to keep private for now. Hehe I don't get a mystery vibe of ads with "hey I am Ghost and am looking for penpals, write me" ;D Ps, Alecto, you can check out penpals sites what most people write, or answer the subjects I wrote about in the first post (music taste, do you like sports, what kind of sport, to watch, to particiapte, favorite spot/location, interests, hobbies...)

Yeah I could do that. I don't really put my hobbies and stuff down most of the time, because I'm afraid people would think that I only want to talk to people that are into the samethings I am. Which isn't true. So maybe when I get better, and feel like penpaling I'll try that out.

Strange, with me it is more the opposite. I feel more connected to people who have similar interests.
But I think the main thing is if personalities match well enough. I guess those people who I didn't felt comfortable around did not had anything with me in common, not interest or personality wise.
If you share both to a degree, it is great fun.

I do feel a connection to people with similar interests. But I like talking to those, who are interested in different things. That way I can learn about some stuff, and maybe pick up a new hobby myself.
