I have these books. The books have methods to help social phobia to general shyness. I recommend Shyness & social anxiety workbook and 10 simple solutions to shyness, because they help by changing your thinking step-by-step and give you time to do the exercises.
The shyness & social anxiety workbook, proven techniques for overcoming your fears. by Martin M. Antony. Ph.d Richard P.Swinson. M.D
10 simple solutions to shyness by Martin M Antony. Ph.d
Painfully Shy, how to overcome social anxiety and reclaim your life by Barbara G Markway Ph.d and Gregory P. Markway Ph.d
Overcoming social anxiety and shyness, a clinically proven step-by-step program to recovering on your own by Gillian Butler

He was very expensive, a bit arrogant and tough on his patients, but that's New York for you. (I bailed out on therapy "early" when I decided to move West, so don't look for me in the next edition.)

He also has a self-help audio program to help people overcome social anxiety. Supposedly its the next best thing to therapy But its too expensive, costs $300 and I read over in the Sp forums that its a piece of crap.

I have recently read a second book that really made me go "oh" (epiphany) Its called "7 habits of highly effective people" Its not a shyness book per-se but sets up a really good framework for looking at life in general I would highly recommend it to anyone.
The other book was "breaking the chains of low self esteem"
Out of everything I have read these 2 really opened my eyes and made me look at things from a different perspective as opposed to just pointing out facts.

I'm reading the power vs. force series URLbut this reading is not for the faint of heart... it requires one to surrender all positionality and have one's deep rooted belief systems questioned... it is more a path to spiritual enlightenment and happiness then specifically combatting shyness but my problem has always been negativity, and this series has done wonders for me. Again, not for everyone though.

"The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook" by Edmund J. Bourne is a good one.
"...a practical and comprehensive guide that offers the latest information on how to overcome panic attacks, agoraphobia, social fears, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, or other anxiety disorders."
I have personally found it to be very helpful with my social anxiety disorder.

"The Shy Single: a bold guide to dating for the less-than-bold dater" by Bonnie Jacobson, Ph.D.
I haven't read the book yet but I've flipped through. It seems like a very well written book with a lot of good advice for shys. This book seems to have been written for those who are "just shy"; if you have social anxiety disorder, social phobia, avoidant personality disorder, etc. this book may not be very helpful.

1984-it proves that life will only get worse and there is nothing you can do about it... ...oh, wait, you said self-help books? <joke>
i haven't come across any good ones. i wish the Bible had a chapter on what to do if you are cursed with shyness (please, just one verse!) but somehow, i don't think God cares if you are shy, which is okay when it comes to having a relationship with Him, but i find it hard to have relationships with other people.

I ordered "Overcoming social anxiety step by step" from the social anxiety institute. I am really looking forward to trying this cbt audio series. I have read that many people suffering from crippling social anxietybenefitted from these tapes. some were able to completely overcome their social anxiety. Heres the link www.socialanxietyinstitute.org/audioseries.html

I read a little book by Bernardo Carducci. I think it was called "The Pocket Guide to Making Small Talk" or something like that. That was probably the most helpful one for me, because I was clueless when it came to conversation. Other than that though, the books that helped me the most weren't self help books. Good novels can change your view.
