By all means my shyness is no where near as bad as it used to be and i have come leaps and bounds over the last few months. However i still wish to get over the last of my shyness and i am hoping this method will not only help me but others on this board too.
Recently i was lucky enough to hook up a webcam (actually my eyetoy from the PS2) with an in-built microphone to my computer. Why have i posted this in the self help section of the board i hear you cry? Well let me explain.
I came up with a method how this may help with my shyness (this being a personal thing as it may not work for everyone). I have been talking with a close friend of mine for many years now, but never have been able to talk to her in person or on the phone on account of my shyness. She is very understanding of my situation and has provided me with help and support as far back as i have known her.
Now i haven't really had the opportunity to try this out yet so i don't know how affective this will be, but this is what i hope will help me that little bit more:
1. First of all i will get used to typing to her with my webcam on. Though un-nerving at first i hope it will get easier over time. I'm hoping by using my webcam and knowing someone is looking at me the whole time, it will eventually put me slightly more at ease when it comes to being in the presence of other people while out, as i feel very self concious amongst others.
2. When I am used to the first step i will then bring the microphone into play but only have her typing to me still. However, where I will still type my replies i won't actually hit the send button. Instead I will type out what I want to say and then read it aloud into the microphone. With this technique I hope for it to become natural and eventually second nature, without even the need for me to type it out anymore.
3. Now after a while of this my confidence should be higher as now my friend will have seen the way i act, my facial expressions, my mannerisms and the way i talk. Now for the big step. Actually speaking to her through the use of her microphone. Now i really am hoping that the first two steps will have made me comfortable enough for this...as i said before i don't know how affective this will be and i may just clam up as soon as i hear her voice.
In theory I think it's a good plan and I really do think it will help me a lot. It won't be an instant cure for shyness, as there are so many more factors to consider as you all well know. But if it does work as well as I think, it should allow me to be able to talk to anyone as well as I type...if that makes sense.
If any of you thinks this sounds like a good idea and you can afford to get yourself a webcam then give it a shot! In fact it might even be a good idea to try it out with someone you've met off this board! At least that way you're guaranteed someone who can relate and understand your dilemma!
I'll let you know in a few months how it works out for me
