I finally saw Eternal Sunshine. I kind of resisted seeing it because it had Jim Carey and he annoys me in his comedic roles sometimes. But in this movie he is good and very believable as is Kate Winslet.
I like the movie and I think the memory erasing idea is well used if a little unrealistic. If the movie was set in the far future or something it would have been easier to accept that part, but it doesn't take anything away from the story. The only part that bothered me was the use of TONS of special effects which got distracting. The story itself is very good though.
As for Rules of Attraction, I agree that the characters are all pretty hard to like. But what the movie is going for is a satire of modern life and modern "values". It tries to show how meaningless and superficial people's lives have become and how nobody can make a real connection with anybody else because everyone is so self centered and so busy building up thier egos.
This is the same idea used in American Psycho which is another movie based on a book by Bret Ellis. He basically created both those stories and more just like them. If you approach his work with that in mind you can value it for what it is. It is depressing, but keep in mind the characters aren't supposed to be realistic and they aren't. They are extreme examples of the worst things in us, brought out and amplified to show their effects.

I saw it the weekend, it wasn't as good as i thought it would be after seeing all the good reviews, i would of liked it better without the memory erasing, its still a good film, especially the first 30 or 40 mins.

eternal sunshine is the best film i've seen-its definitely the film which has affected me the most, and anyone who didn't like it was obviously too lazy or ignorant to be bothered.the mind erasing thing(btw saying that isn't spoiling anything as its obvious from trailors that that happens) isn't a major thing so who cares if its bs or not-its the lesson thats learnt from the erasing and the story they go on through it which is important. i definitly related to jim careys character, as well as kate winslets on some level, and definitely found 'my film' when i saw this-i would really recomend it to anyone(except people who don't like anything you have to actually think about)
