How about this, what is it you like to listen to but only secretly? You'd change the station if someone else was in the car, but on your own you sing along. BTW don't people look funny singing in their cars? I'll admit to Madonna and Michael Jackson. But only a couple of their songs.

Hey, don't be so ashamed of Madonna and Michael Jackson. Their music is cool. Well at least it was cool...their 80's stuff (imo). Umm...well, that's kind of a hard question. I kind of get nervous about anything I like, just because it's not the "norm" amongst my peers. I tend to like older music, particularly the 70's. So you know, the Bee Gees song "How Deep is Your Love" was playing on TV, and I told my friend I loved that song (this was like a couple years ago) and she just gave me a weird, very weird look and said something like, "Are you serious?"..in a bad way of course. And I just kind of got quiet and ashamed...lol...I can kind of laugh about it now. Another reason why I get kind of nervous of telling people is because of my older sister. She's given me odd looks also because of the stuff I like to listen to. She's like, "Man, you should have been born in another time." Which is, I think true, because I've always thought that, but it's still weird having someone else tell you that, especially if they make you feel like your an alien or something. I'm just glad I don't follow other people's taste and stick to my own now. I used to try to hide, but now I'm beginning not to care. I like what I like and I can't change that and should never change that for anyone. Anyways, I think I've said enough.

Christina Aguilera- although I'm not really "ashamed" of liking her. I think of a guilty pleasure as something you know sucks, but like anyway. Christina Aguilera, to me, isn't like that, she makes great music (most of her stuff, anyway).

Bee Gees were good I like them too. I wouldn't put madonna into the same class as them and MJ, although I'm not too big on MJ's music he does have some totally listenable stuff out. In fact I wouldn't put madonna or MJ into the class with the Bee Gees.
SS I can relate to being born in the wrong time. My mom always tells me I was born in the wrong decade (I guess she carried me for a long time) but I think I may have been born in the wrong century sometimes!

By myself, I tend not to listen to music stations (It's the CBC for me), but at work people lug radios in and listen to one of two stations - the "rock" station with lots of old Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith and AC/DC played alongside the likes of Nickelback (ugh, I hear "the way you still say please as you're looking up at me" and I think poor Chad has acquired some terrible rock-star brain-wasting disease from slurping too much groupie juice - most stupid line ever) or the "energy" station playing dance music alongside 80's English hair band music. Often you can hear the two stations overlapping.
Anyway, when I'm working besides someone listening to the Energy station I keep hearing that Destiny's Child song that was recently number one (Breathe?), and felt dirty for enjoying it and wanting to hear it again. Felt bad enough when I thought it was a Jennifer Lopez song.

I seem to have developed a habit of singing along to various cheesy songs whenever out having a couple of drinks with friends. 'Footloose' seems to be a particular fav (Kenny Loggins is a musical god ). Another one, maybe more for the Brits on the board?, 'The One and Only', by Sir Chesney Hawkes esq. I know, I deserve to be severely beaten by a group of pensioners who think I've stolen their last Werther's original toffee, but that song rocks! As with StrawberrySweetie and Medici, I too have been told numerous times I belong in a different decade. I would go through phases of listening to stuff by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Al Green, Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke - mainly through my parent's influence (ie, raiding their music collection). This was around the ages of 15-17, when the vast majority of people I knew where either heavily into metal, or the true devil's music: innane pop drivel like Steps or the Spice Girls. Like I can talk, Chesney Hawkes and Kenny Loggins?!? If that doesn't qualify me for medical help then nowt will. You ain't seen me, right?

Christina Aguilera, to me, isn't like that, she makes great music (most of her stuff, anyway). I agree. I think she's an awesome singer. I wish it would have been her cds I bought instead of Britney Spears. She's got actual talent. I think the only reason I never did was because I could borrow my older sister's cd. SS I can relate to being born in the wrong time. My mom always tells me I was born in the wrong decade (I guess she carried me for a long time) but I think I may have been born in the wrong century sometimes! Lol...yeah. There are several different time periods that I would have liked to live through. I guess we just have to try to think of all the bad things that went on during those times and be thankful for not being born then. Sometimes, though, I wonder if past lives are in fact, real. - mainly through my parent's influence (ie, raiding their music collection). Yeah, same here. The older music is what they always wanted to listen to in the car or on any radio and I think that's how it began for me. And I like to go through their old records. That's how I came to love Jim Croce. The moment I put that one on, I just loved the sound and his style.

In high school while everyone was listening to Britney Spears and the boy bands, I was listening to The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Smashing Pumpkins, so basically big band, classic rock and rock music. I had a picture of Frank Sinatra in my locker in senior year and my friend came up to me and he asked me "Who is that??" "Frank Sinatra." "Ohhhh..." Totally clueless. Which is funny considering the type of music he liked. I am not really "ashamed" that I like showtunes, but it is not something I bring up in regular conversation. ~InfiniteAbyss

I think wheels cleared it up...to really be ashamed about it the group or musician would really have to suck and you know they suck but you still like them. What I was going for was more like something you like that most other people wouldn't understand and that they might ridicule you for liking. But I will also include things that knowingly suck but are still eagerly listened to.
Maybe I should have just called it music that you secretly like.

Lol...yeah. There are several different time periods that I would have liked to live through. I guess we just have to try to think of all the bad things that went on during those times and be thankful for not being born then. Sometimes, though, I wonder if past lives are in fact, real. I thought about this and came to an idea (not that past lives are real). From what I read about history it seems like different types of people dominate socially in different eras of time, and they really set the tone for what life is like. These are the people who head the major organizations, control the media, etc. For example these days it seems like very rough, extroverted, outgoing people dominate. So most things reflect their tastes and choices and they try to define what is normal. If we go back, for instance, to the 1700's in America the same type of people who dominate now would have been seriously look down on. Back then, raw ambition was the worst kind of sin. It seems to me that in those days more of the leaders of society were thoughtful, introverted, and graceful. Being loud, vulgar, mindless - all these things didn't fly in those days but they seem to now. And you can go into history and find ancient societies wherein loud vulgar people were in control as they are today. For instance Ancient Rome. So I think something goes on that brings different types into power at different times in history. It has a lot to do with how the society is structured. Egalitarianism and raw democracy tend to breed vulgarity and ultimately lead to a dictatorship.....but I'm going too far. Anyways just a few thoughts. Of course many things get better with time and I do think we have much to be thankful for being alive with modern technology and ethics, not to mention hygiene.

I don't think I've ever thought about it like that before. You're right, though. It does seem that way. I wonder how it can change so much. Hmmm....*goes into deep thought*. Hasn't it been said somewhere something like, "One day, the meek will rule the world."? I know I've heard that said somewhere. It might have been more like, "Hopefully, one day the meek will rule the world", though. I don't know...I'm confused now. Maybe there will come a time again where it will change again. Then again, maybe not. I can't really imagine it changing back, once the world has gotten this far. Sorry, I think I'm just babbling now.... Oh yeah...and I'm sorry for getting you off topic.
