this film is about a shy woman and a shy man of few words who meet and fall in love right before the american civil war starts. even though their words are few they spend years dreaming about their reunion, writing letters, and in his case walking hundreds of miles to return to her, in her case fending off the advances of other men in his absence. it's a beautiful film in spite of some scenes of brutal violence (war).

hmmm...yes a very good film, the person that does most of the talking is Ruby (Renee Zellwegger) so they put her there to entertain because our two shy characters are you know what. But the first time I saw it, I didn't even notice that they were shy until you posted this. But now that I remember, they are.

I didn't think Nicole Kidman's character was all that shy. She seemed normal, but in the wrong place. A rich city girl in a small town. Maybe she was sheltered. The man I would say was a man of few words and shy around women, but otherwise pretty robust and courageous.
What she liked about him was his (percieved) innocence. You know how people project personalities onto quiet people. She may have projected her own purity onto him. Then the world got in the way - classic plot. A decent movie, but a little overdone in the ending for my taste.

Natalie Portman was really good in this when we see those soldiers take her baby and when she holds Jude Law's hand in the bed. so sad.
