I've been here a couple of months and posted an intro that was probably too long. So I'll do it this time via your questions.

1. Are you living with your parents/grandparents?

I live in the country with about 5 acres of land. Since I bought the place in 1991 I've planted around 250 trees (of the 250 around 35 lived - even still we all call it 'Ron's Woods' since most are now well over 20' high) 2 ponds border the back...in all, a nice place for someone like me who doesn't like crowds.

oh it's incorperated..hardly any people though to make it really worth it. Its probably only for tax collection anyway.

I always thought something was wrong with me. Then I decided to do something about it. I made some changes, changed my spiritual path for one, and at the same time I organized my life alot more. That fixed alot of things. Once my son was born and we discovered some behavior problems (aspergers related) - I'm convinced that this was what my problem was all along.

As for goals, thats a tough one. I tend to be content with things as they are right now.

12. Have you made any significant progress in overcoming the condition? I

'm a fairly confident person unlike yesteryear and I am alot better confronting things, like people vs avoiding conflict. But - I am not really successful making friends.

13. What is the nature of your relationship with your parents?

Its gone from estrangement to civil.

14. Have your parents been able to maintain the viability of their relationship?

Sort of.

15. Did you have a strict upbringing? ... are your parents over-protective?

Very religious - my parents founded one of the large area churches so guess where I was every Sunday, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. Probably why I have nothing to do with organized religion.

2 - I'm the middle child

my son

19. What are you interested in?

Back yard birds. I really got into it in the early 90's after putting up a blue bird house and watching them nest. Now I have a dozen or so I've made along with 6 bird feeders. Our yard is like a Paradise.

20. What do you like to do for fun?

I love wandering the vast state lands near my home. I usually will spend 3 days a month - sometimes more, in there by myself. I cook over the fire, drink beer, read, meditate, and just alot of walking. Its a good way to ground yourself.

I also like to maintain a vegetable garden each year. (going to miss fresh tomato's)

I love cooking.

My wife was my first, unless you count the prostitute from my army years.

I have maintained an exercise program from the 'bullying' years - So I'm actually in pretty good shape for my age.

I think my shyness, at the moment, is the result of low self-esteem and depression. I don’t like to talk to people because I don’t want them to think I’m a loser.

My goals? I’d like to have a career that I like, preferably in law or the nonprofit sector. Socially, I’d like to be able to function like a normal human being. I don’t know if I want to get married and have a family or whatnot, but I’d like to be able to have the power to do so if I wanted to.

Have you made any significant progress in overcoming the condition?

I think so. I’m not scared of people anymore, and can make small talk just fine, but conversations of depth elude me.

What is the nature of your relationship with your parents?

Fine. Not wonderful, not traumatic, just fine.

Have your parents been able to maintain the viability of their relationship?

Wow, that’s got to be the most elaborate way you could possibly say, “Are your parents still together?”

No, they’re not.

If they have separated/divorced, how old were you when it happened?
... and did it have a major impact on your own life?

I was like two or three years old, so it didn’t have an affect on me. I couldn’t imagine why they married in the first place, to be honest.

My dad was more lenient, my mom was a little overprotective. Neither to a great degree.

A stepbrother and a stepsister, but I don’t really think of them as siblings.

Me.

Off the top of my head, history. Right now I’m studying up a little on the history of the pre-WWII USSR.

I’m a cemetery buff (not in a macabre way) www.findagrave.com is one of my favorite sites. I also like to think of myself as an amateur ghost-hunter.

My timidity attracted some bullies in elementary and middle school, but by high school people pretty much ignored me.

Normal weight for my height, and other than my occasional use of reading glasses (mainly when I’m tired), none of the above. That’s me in my sig line (duh).

I think my shyness is a lack of self confidence & maybe a little bit of depression, although I've always been quiet. My shyness has improved with age, I have friends & don't spend most of my time in the house away from everyone, although thats what id love to do sometimes! I suppose I have a fairly normal life. I hate going places on my own or doing anything new, I hate being taken out of my comfort zone.

My goals.. I want Tobe successful. I don't want to have to worry about money, I'd like to eventually buy a house with someone I love & have lots of babies .. But I'm going to have the time of my life before all of that! ;D

Well I don't spend every day & night in my bedroom locked away from everyone anymore. I moved to south wales from Birmingham without my family or friends & made a new life for myself. The only person I knew was my boyfriend.

Although I don't see my mum very often, shes my best friend i couldn't love anyone more (apart from my little sister of course )

My dad is another story, I don't think I could hate anyone more. I hope I never see him again

They weren't together for the first 8 years of my life. I first met him a couple of weeks after my 8th birthday, they then split up again when I was 15 & together again at 16

Yes, I have done things I never ever thought I could do (too many to specifically name) but there is still a long way for me to go

Mostly good, my dad is shy too so we don't talk all that much, and sadly they still embarass me at times, but I guess that's what all parents do and I'm learning to accept it

My goals are to go to school (college), become an elementary school teacher, get married, have children and just be happy! I have had these goals for quite a while now, but get sooo shy and nervous whenever I try to get started with any of it, and so I just stop, grr!

Not really. I am still kind of 'stuck.'

My dad is okay. We get along to a point and then just get on eachothers nerves. He thinks I just need to 'get over' my shyness. I'd like to, but it's not as easy as he seems to think. My mom was great. I could talk to her about anything, I really miss her!!

My parents were very happy together and if my mom hadn't died 2 years ago, I'm sure they'd still be together and happy as can be.

My parents were not too strict. They were pretty great. We had rules, but were also allowed to have lots of fun. We were allowed to make our own decisions (within reason) and learn from them.

I have one brother, 21 and a sister, 19.

I have a couple of friends here in town, and a few up in Connecticut where I used to live. I am really only 'close' with my friend Robin here in TN and my friend Amanda in CT.

I would have to say my cousin, Teresa. She is just someone I can talk to about anything.

What are you interested in?

I am interested in having fun I love the rush of adreneline I get on a roller-coaster. I am interested in helping children learn, which is why I want to be a teacher.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to go rollerblading or for bike rides. I love bowling, watching tv, going to concerts, watching movies and listening to music (mostly country). I like playing mini golf, reading, and going to church too. I just totally LOVE going to amusement parks, roller coasters are AWESOME!! I love rock climbing too. I really am just a kid at heart and even like playing on playgrounds, lol!

Not too often. Most are busy with school and family. Usually after church on Sundays I will take my friend's 2 girls to the park or something, it's the most fun I have with other people all week.

Yes I am still a virgin. Granted part of that is by choice...I'd like to be until I'm married. That could change though if I found the right guy....who actually likes me.

I am a bit overweight. I want to lose about 50 lbs. I have actually started a diet this week. Haven't lost any yet as I've literally just started.

I do have a hearing loss. I wear a hearing aid in my left ear. With the hearing aid though, I hear almost 100%. Most people don't even know I have a hearing loss. My speech is just fine and sounds normal.

Nope. I have a hearing loss, but that doesn't limit me at all. Well, I did want to go into the military at one point and I couldn't, but that's the only time it's stood in my way. My shyness is the only thing that holds me back.

Nature of my shyness; shy with everyone at first. Eventually wears off, but sometimes it can go on if I feel the person i'm talking to is higher (more respected) than me.

About four years ago I went to a psychologist and told him that I thought I had social anxiety disorder. Four weeks and over $1000 later he told me I had social anxiety disorder.

... is it preventing you from achieving your goals in life?
It has and continues to make achieving my goals extremely challenging.

... what ARE your goals in life (if any)?
I would like to :
- kick my SAD
- get married, have children
- go back to college (I dropped out because of my SAD, didn't know I had it at that time)
- start my own business

Have you made any significant progress in overcoming the condition?
Yes. I am able to remain calm and can function in some stressful social situations. I still need to work on my social skills and not avoiding people.

What works for me:
I watch what I eat, exercise regularly (helps a lot), get plenty of sleep, yoga, meditate, take vitamins, limit or eliminate caffeine and alcohol intake, take 400mg SAMe/day (helps reduce depression/anxiety), live on my own and work full time (improves self confidence dramatically). The key here is regularity: I had to change my lifestyle but it was worth it. I feel better than I have ever felt but I still have far to go.

My mom tried to raise me Catholic but it didn't take. I never got into much trouble (naturally) so I was hardly ever punished.

My only friend got married and moved away about 3 years ago; I haven't heard from him since. I don't have any other friends. That's why I'm here.

I love bicycling, reading (Nietzsche, Emerson, Thoreau, Plato, etc.), playing classical guitar, making guitars, woodworking.

I had a girlfriend when I was in eighth grade. She dumped me after two weeks because I was too quiet. That was my last girlfriend. We held hands a few times: that was it.

No, I am actually tall, well built, and pretty darn good looking (if I do say so myself). In high school I had it rough: girls would ask me out all the time. Most of the time I would just freeze up and not say anything. One time a girl I really liked (captain of the cheerleading squad, I kid you not) asked me if I wanted to go country line dancing. I told her I didn't like country music (which is true) but I was really just too afraid. It makes me sick when I think about it.

The only thing that is wrong with me is my social anxiety disorder. Otherwise I am extremely healthy.
