I realise that there are a lot of people from the US and Canada on here (and many other places). I live in Dunfermline, Scotland and we have a band called Idlewild, they're six albums down the line and are genuinely pretty brilliant, supported Pearl Jam, REM, Pixies, Coldplay and a few others before, used to be fairly big over here in the UK, done some very low-key tours in the US. Apart from supporting Pearl Jam, I've been told that their profile is negligble in the States, so thought you might want to hear them. They played my home town earlier this year and were superb, thought some people on here might want to check them out. After work I tend to go home, put the kettle on and throw on some of their music, it's music that you can properly set time aside to listen to, I like a lot. They've changed from all-out punk rock in their early days to bleak folk tinged indie/alternative rock, love them a lot. This site has some of their songs up: www.dizzler.com/index.search.dv8?q=IdlewildThe songs I'd go for to begin with are There's Glory In Your Story (a b-side, but also their best song IMHO), You Held The World In Your Arms, Little Discourage and No Emotion. Hope you all like them - and that maybe you could all recommend a band yourself if you want to!
