Hi,
I usually do not complain about people to their bosses but tonight I got a really rude cashier at Walmart. I came walking up to the register and I saw that she was at another register stocking plastic bags. There was a guy with a buffer going around which was pretty loud and I was trying to avoid walking into his path.
The cashier looked up and saw me and she came walking over to the register with an attitude. She sounded pretty snotty saying I should speak up because she can not hear over that guy. I was willing to let that go until I slid my debit card through their card reader and it gave me trouble as usual. She then got all snotty to me about that acting like it's too much trouble for her to do her job. She grabbed my debit card out of my hand and then looked at the reader saying it's acting fine.
I looked at it where it was asking me for my code and I responded that it did not do that for me the first time. I tried to hit the code in and it did not go. I told her about it. I was about to the point of walking out and she slid it again and acted like it wanted to take as a credit card. I started to object and then it came back asking for a code. I hit my code in and got my stuff and left.
I work nights and have been working 7 days a week. Plus I have been doing yard work and extra stuff making me loose sleep because I need to get stuff done. I went into Walmart after work thinking I was going to get a few things to eat for dinner. I just found her attitude totally uncalled for. I tried to call the store so I can speak to a manager but no one would answer the phone. I am going to try again after I sleep.
I don't know I guess I needed to rant because I am pretty pissed and need to get some sleep. I would have walked out but needed the stuff.

Let it out buddy. Never hold your anger back because if you do it really builds up inside. I used to hold my anger and only used to release it to my immediate family, because I'm not shy in front of them. But I realized it was just it was just ruining my relationship with them. So I decided to speak my mind if someone really annoyed me, I didn't hold back and it came out naturally to my surprise.

Thanks Jai, I needed to rant about it last night cause I could not get a manager. I got one today and told him what happened. He said he was going to look into it and see that it does not happen again.

Good for you that you did something about it, despite how nerve-wracking it can be to rock the boat, especially as a shy person. Personally, I shrug at cashier rudeness. For one thing, at least they're not trying to make conversation, right? ;D But also, their job kind of sucks. It's boring, it pays crap, and I only have to deal with them for a minute or two at most before I get to skip home with my groceries. If they want to be pissy for those two minutes, let 'em, lol. I was just thinking recently about how a lot of older people and people from third-world type countries seem to have grown up with this attitude that no matter what job you do, you're going to try to be the best at that job; you're going to work hard. But in the last generation in the US, and seemingly in Western countries in general, we've grown up learning that we're special and we can do anything--we can be an astronaut! And hard work, while encouraged, seems incidental to attaining big success; it's not an end unto itself. This attitude is often rightly, I think, credited with leaving a lot of people unhappy at their jobs. Plus the increasingly depersonalized nature of working at the bottom rung of a big corporation doesn't help. If you're a Walmart cashier, you feel like a disposable employee (which you are) and like you're wasting your potential doing something beneath your intelligence (and let's face it, being a cashier is beneath almost everybody's intelligence). The people around you either expect you to suck it up, or they pity you a little bit for having such a crappy job. It can all be mighty frustrating. Hope you don't mind the tangent there, by the way. Just thinking aloud. Frustration isn't an excuse to get huffy with innocent customers. It doesn't take a lot of effort just to be polite.

I know what you mean about rude cashiers. I've gotten that too, and even at a Hotel. I was so mad that I felt like writing the Hotel a formal complaint (after I got home from traveling) But, I chickened out and too much time has passed since the incident anyway. They shouldn't be treating customers that way ! And if you still feel like complaining after you get the much needed sleep and all, I would root for you all the way. (and if you don't feel like doing it, I support you still - I know you don't know me, I'm new on here, but I just wanted to give my 2 cents). I think WalMart has a high turnover rate, so if you should decide to complain (this is just a suggestion, mind you, it's absolutely YOUR decision , I would tell the manager or the owner of what happened (maybe not necessarily give the cashier's name) and say something to the effect of having them make sure their cashiers are being polite to the customers, and that "the customer is always right". I know some don't believe that, and it may not absolutely or actually be "true" , but in the matter of building and keeping customer good will, that is the motto that is/should be practiced by stores, restaurants, etc. anywhere where people (customers) are buying/purchasing either a good or a service.

I turned her in. I did not know her name and thought the store receipt would give it but it did not. The manager told me to look for a group of numbers under the store manager's name on it and told me to give him that number. I was willing to let the comment about me needing to speak up go but it was when she got super rude over the debit card reader was what really pushed me over the edge. I hope she got disciplined over it because all of that was really uncalled for. I don't know what happened and I have not been back in that Walmart since. Yeah, that was the first time I ever turned anyone in over anything. Usually I let stuff slide and willing to look at it that maybe that person is having a bad day etc.

I work as a cashier because I'm a student its a way to have money comming in without spending effort . I like that in the electronics sections i particularly enjoy working stock ie arranging it etc. I've done it for abput 3 years. I started just doing checkoputs. Checkout is hell just simply because a lot of customers are rude and no they are not always right because there are such thing as criminals who do all they can to confuse you and make money. It's hard to take the customer is always right rhoutine when they yell at you for things that have nothing to do with you and they are just simple "WRONG" . Mind you I am always polite and try to help them as i can within policy. Some people just can't be pleased though and go out of there ways to be rude.I think sometime people are like that on purpose because they like feeling superior to us retail workers even though most of my colleagues although young are quite intelligent and study such things as medicine, business law engineering. I feel that doing this job has helped with my shyness though .

Myself, I would have let it go. Wal-Mart and many other places are staffed by low-paid, overworked people and sometimes it gets to be too much for them. That cashier was undoubtedly fired because the manager knew he could easily replace her.

I am really annoyed at public service and if we let it slide it continues. I am almost afraid to buy bacon at the deli, cause the woman looks like she will bite my head off. Our money pays the bread on their table. I've had enough, and just because I'm not doing their crummy job doesnt mean I deserve their feeling about it dumped on me. lets unite against crappy public service and change it. Dave, take a stance, your worth better treatment than this

I agree that the workers at Wal-Mart are overworked and underpaid, and Wal-Mart is not exactly the most high-class store anyway. It would be a shame, however, if shy people use the self checkout line just in order to avoid human interaction. That would probably make shyness worse.
I was treated to very rude behavior once at an oil change place. Maybe it was because I was quiet and didn't seem friendly or self-confident, but the desk woman treated me contemptuously. I didn't complain, but I never went back to that oil change shop again. In fact, I later realized that that is probably the kind of shop that tries to rip you off by telling you you need a new filter or other part that you don't really need at all. Someone with a cynical attitude like that will probably act cynically in other ways too.

That's what happened to me regarding the Hotel - I was having some trouble with that damn interrac machine; plus I had carpal tunnel at the time and was having trouble even signing my name (she was so rude, she acted skeptical that I even had carpal tunnel and practically "called me on the carpet" for saying that's why I was having difficulty signing my name!!!) GRRRR that made me so mad; I mean I was a paying customer; not some hobo looking for a free place to stay!!! And...if that wasn't bad enough, the next day Im checking out and there's a different lady there; and SHE'S rude to me also!!! And I didn't say anything to her I just wanted to check out.

I feel that doing this job has helped with my shyness though . I appreciate what you're saying. I was a cashier a few years ago before i got ill. If you go back and read my post, I did clarify my statement by saying "It may not absolutely or actually be true..."; but I was speaking of an attitude of service to the customer, not that I thought that always the customer is always right. I absolutely hate cashier work; i could never get that damn register to work right; and I made many mistakes which I could never figure out what I did wrong; and a lot of customers made me know it too - they spared no words in their opinions of my "incompetence". I could have added all the stuff up with a pencil; but they were too damn impatient for that; plus the boss wanted me to use that machine!!! So i know both sides of this. But when you go in there to buy something, as I have done many times at many diffrent stores --not only Wal-Mart; and you are nice to the cashier, and say hello how are you? And they treat you that way, it is difficult to bite one's tongue and say nothing. Sometimes I do this; sometimes I don't. If a customer is nice to them and not acting like asshole; what right do they have to treat a customer rudely ?!? we're giving them BUSINESS!!!
