When I'm standing all by myself, at my register minding my own business and some customer comes up and goes. " Wow, you're so quiet" or "Smile".
What am I supposed to do? Talk to myself and smile like an idiot?

They're just people with good intentions trying to give you advice. You can either take their advice, or give them the kiss off gesture. Bottom line is, who cares what they think?

since we live among other people, interact with them and depend on them it is foolish to claim that we don't or should not care about what they think of us

I wouldnt even give it the energy of worry. That is so weird. Customers just dont talk to each other, unless they are shopping together because they are friend or family. This person saying this to you is the odd one or perhaps they know you from somewhere else they see you alot at. Even then and if it is so, it is none of their business. Give them the fuzzy look, like they just dropped out of the sky and they are the freak.

lol.. its not something I worry about and if it's advice it's strange. Why would you tell some one they're quiet when they don't have any one around to talk to anyway?

I was, and at times still are, a cashier for many years. Part of being cashier is to engage customers in small talk when they approach. You are expected to break the ice. It's not easy for a shybie, I know, but customers often expect cashiers to be a kind of greeter and wave them over for checkout or help. I still work for HomeDepot and I was the Outside Garden Cashier for a couple of years. I was expected to not only check out the customers but also to answer Garden related questions. And because I was capable of it, I loaded all their stuff in their vehicles too. Now, I mainly work in the Rental section as a tech, but we function a lot like cashiers in many respects too. We greet customers and answer questions, particularly ones on the phone too a lot of times. Talking to people like this is tough, I know, but it just takes some getting used to.

I don't have a problem addressing customers. Its just the few that come out of no where when I'm not paying attentin and go "wow your so quiet" that I find funny. Made I didn't explain myself to well I meant it as a funny thing rather than a "poor me" thing

"Oh, I'm always quiet on Tusedays between 1and 2pm." Disarm them with your Alecto charm and you cannot fail.

Didn't you used to live in Florida too, Alecto?

I did live in Florida. Now I'm here in Wisconsin. I'd love to move back some day, but the cost of living here is so much cheaper. I figured we'd need to make almost 3 times as much to live there to pay for a place and day care. Having the in laws across the street helps a lot, lol.

Strange, I'm the one who is usually engaging the cashiers in the small talk (usually at the grocery store, but non-food stores also). Either there are some really shy cashiers out there who might be better off pursuing another line of work and they're only doing this perhaps because the work they want is unavailable to them in some way, or there's another reason why they're not talking when my turn comes up in the line to be waited on.

Sometimes I think people think we're up to no good because we don't talk to them, so they don't know what we're thinking and think the worst.

Me I'm well thanks how are you? cashier.......no reply
that really bugs me just because there isn't a continuing script dosnt mean they can be rude. sorry gone off on a tangent....
