I sometimes think that people ignore me so much I could commit a crime and no one would notice, but I suppose that was not the case this morning.
As I attempted to open the building for work today, I punched in the alarm code and it didn't work. Thinking I made an error, I punched it in again and again it failed to work. Earlier in the week the alarm company called and said the alarm was "sending off crazy signals", so I chalked it up to some electrical error. In an exercise in futility, I tried to call my boss on her cell phone to try to get the number for the security company, knowing all along she wouldn't have her phone on. At that point there was nothing else I could do, but start setting things up for the day and working. To make matters worse a light in the front of the building was going out and flickering, like a disorienting strobe light, along with the flashing and beeping of the alarm. I tried of thinking about how to explain this to the police when they showed up with out looking like a complete idiot or a criminal.
Not one, but two police came to interrogate me, verify my identity, and find the 'official key holders' according to the alarm company. I still couldn't reach my boss by phone and the police wanted someone to identify me, so I ended up giving them the number of my boss's father. They called the number and with my luck her mother with Alzheimer's answered the phone. And it seemed like every person I ever laughed on the roadside getting a ticket for speeding was out on the road rubbernecking this morning. Eventually they must have got hold of him and successfully verified that I was who I am. At this point I still think that an electrical error is setting off the alarm, only later to find out that the code was changed and nobody bothered to tell me.
Not in an attempt to keep me out or anything, but it just slipped everyone's mind to tell the one person who opens the business five days a week that the code has been changed. Two of my co-workers were supposed to call me to give me the code and both of them forgot. My boss was also supposed to originally call me and passed the task off to other people, also forgot. I guess some things are just low priority.
