Right now i'm doing scanning and general office work. It's the lowest job there.
Today the tech director said they want to switch me to a tech position... like something in the sciences, even though I don't have degrees in that. She says i'm smart and that i'm wasting my time being in scanning.
well i don't really think i'm that smart plus i'm not a good speaker.
And that's another thing, she said "But you'll have to come out of your shell" . That kinda upset me. She thinks me not talking and being outgoing means i have a shell. well yes i may have one but i also have a speech impediment ( i didn't tell her about it). I'm not gonna be loud mouth , why do i have to be.
Anyways, she said i i take another position that is not scanning my salary can double which is great. but i don't know if i can do it.
she and all the other supervisors that i've worked for in that company all think i can do it. But i don't know......i'm slow and i get confused with language and stuff.
what should i do?

If your supervisors think you can do it, you can. Otherwise they would just pick some one else. I think you should take the position they're offering you. In the beginning when you have to talk just bite the bullet and do it, and like any job, the more you do it the easier it will become. Before long you'll be wondering why you were so worried about this in the first place.

I wonder, Peter, if you are promoted to a tech position, will that entails you to do a lot of talking and communicating? Perhaps you can talk this over with your supervisors. About what your job description will going to be. And if that bothers you, why not reveal about your speech impediment? Maybe they can help you with it or assure you that your new job will not have something to do about your impediment.

I've heard "you need to be more outgoing/confident" at every formal job review I've had. I look at it like this, there's a lot of loud people in the world and a lot of overly confident people too, I don't need to be one of them. If I can get my job done then who cares who I do or don't talk to while I'm here? In the end I'm only hurting myself (if anyone at all). If I need help I'll ask but otherwise, no I don't care to get involved in the chatter and personal lives of co-workers (most of whom I don't even like).
If you're lucky enough to get promoted I say go with it!

I've been through similar things a couple of times at work, although I don't have a speech impediment. A promotion that was frightening to even think about at first has become a job that I much preferred every time.
And even if you can't do it you should still have the option of stepping down.
