Dr Rosemary Leonard considers the advantages and disadvantages of antidepressants in today's Express. She explains the chemical causes of depression, and how antidepressant medication addresses the chemical imbalances in the brain. Some patients experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking SSRI antidepressants such as Prozac and Seroxat. These can include dizziness, headaches and nausea. Seroxat is much more likely to cause these problems than Prozac. Sometimes, patients who have just started taking SSRIs can experience side-effects, and Dr Leonard encourages readers to communicate with their GP about their progress and any side-effects.
