Well, a lot of people can handle that well. Me, I don't think I'd handle either side well. Being someone's date and not knowing anyone at a party, or having to take care of a date at a party. I've never had a date at a party, so it's never been an issue.

Personally, I don't think parties are the greatest place for shy people, even or maybe especially for people trying to be less shy. Too overwhelming. All these loud, drunk people wanting you to do things that you find terrifying or just silly (like dance).
Find quieter venues where conversation is at least possible. Play to your strengths.

Not only do I not par-tay because I'm shy or the fact that I don't want to be around a lot of people, but also because I don't drink.

I actually do not drink either. I go to parties to socialize and get out of the house. I actually am no longer shy but I used to be terribly shy. I like talking to the people in this group. ;D

I very rarely drink and never EVER dance (unless im alone and in an especially good mood sometimes) and i avoid parties at all costs. The people on my office team had 2 work parties this week, i didnt attend either. I had to sit in the office all on my own for a long time and had to say "no" to going to parties and make up excuses but i just knew that all that awkwardness would be better than actually going because it would have been such a total disaster for me. As far as i was concerned, attending simply wasnt. I may have alienated myself more by not attending but i dont regret my decision one little bit.
