Shane’s Marathon Diary
4th April –11th April
Friday 4th April
Gym this morning. I’m still working on building up my stamina. Six mile run on a running machine followed by half and hour on a rowing machine and half an hour on the bike. The gym is very warm today. I end up sweating like a pig. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I’m going for a long run from Drum Bridge to the new Laganside Complex. Along the towpath it’s around 5 mile out and the same again back.
Saturday 5th April
The run went brilliantly. The heat made it tough going. The temperature was touching 18 degrees. It was hotter than the gym. It’s a beautiful place to run. The Grand National was on at the same time so it was almost deserted. I left my bottle of water in the boot so I stopped at Laganside and bought one out of the machine. The girl at the Reception desk diddled me. I asked her for change from a £5 note for the machine. She only gave me change of a pound. I didn’t realise till I got home. Can’t do that again.
Sunday 6th April
Rest Day. Legs a bit sore. Nipples red raw. I’ll have to buy some Petrolatum jelly. Jogger’s nipple can be nasty. Only 28 days until Marathon Day. Got my stingy cousin to sponsor me. The look on his face after he signed his name was classic. He’s promised to go out on Saturday with me for another big run. I’ll believe it when I see it!
Monday
7th April
Feeling great this morning. Legs fine. Nipples great. Easy enough day in the gym. Six miles on the running machine and a bit of warming up and down and that was it. Running on those machines gets very boring very quickly. Forget to buy Petroleum jelly. Nipples on fire. Had to throw copious bottles of water down my top.
