I'd appreciate some help too. I used to have a great memory, and no problems paying attention in class.
Now, at college, both of those are shot. I don't remember a damn thing, and I'm often zoning out in class, missing what's being said.

Hehe, glad I'm not alone I don't know - but I HOPE self-discipline can solve the whole problem. Can't be that hard to stay concentrated for a couple of hours, can it? I guess looking to find something of interest and motivational in whatever we try to do is also vital ... beyond that, who knows?

Hmmm, they say the internet is a powerful research tool, but in my case it's mostly a dangerous procrastination device. I too am finding it harder to stay focused on my studies recently. Still, its nothing that a few tight deadlines can't sort out

- Well the obvious thing is sleep (ideally 7-9 hours a day) - Drink plenty. Water does amazing things for your mind. Dehydration reduces your ability to do work considerably...or so I'm told. - Brisk walks are good. I have a 50 minute walk to uni, so by the time I get there I'm fully awake. Much more than when I was on campus in my first year. - Try not to think more than two weeks ahead. It distracts you. - Take regular breaks from work, or play some music for part of the time. Try not to get depressed when working...obviously that will make you lose concentration. - Ideally stop working at 5 or 6 PM and do your own things in the evenings. If ou do work late, work in the dark (with the PC monitor acting as a light). It seems to help a bit lol This is by far the best motivator in the end. When you've got an essay due in the next day and your sitting there with a 1000 more words to write, you'll concentrate!

im studying at university at the moment. ive been finding it very hard lately to concentrate. my mind wanders alot. was just wandering if there are any students out there that can give me any tips. thanksu guys My method in college was to stay up very late until finally I was able to sit down and do some work - usually around 3 am or so. The peace and quiet of the early hours plus the pressure of the coming deadline was what did it for me. I used to drink about 2 liters of mountian dew (high sugar and caffiene soda) in one of those nights. Not a very good way to go about it, but that's what it took sometimes. Then I'd spend the weekends piss drunk and smoking cigs....boy its no wonder my health was all shot to hell after grad school. I don't even want to get into what my diet was like . Don't be like me.

Coming from a graduate student, i can veyr easily understand how you guys feel. Studying is hard, because it requires so much concentration. Especially studying something you don't really like, that can be difficult. In my case, math was my hardest subject. But i went to tutoring, memorized formulas, and double checked my equations to make sure i had everything correctly. Of course, i screwed up half the time, but i was able to pass Elementary Stattistics with a C+, so i survived. For those of you who hate the social sciences, like a lot of students i tutor myself, try to humanize the characters in your courses. For example, Washington and Napoleon are big ones in basic college history. Remember little quirks about these characters; Napoleon, well, he had siezures, womanized a lot, was only 5 feet tall, and tended to be extremely arrogant. Washington? Well, he was overweight, had no education at all, couldn't do math well either, had a terrible temper, and had the coldest expression on any politician i've ever seen. If yall need help with history, I'm your man. Other than that, all i can tell you is get enough sleep, stay away from the alcohol, try not to look at girls too much if yall are guys, and show up for every class and take notes. Also, a professor once suggested that whenever i got what he called a "genius idea" i should write it down. Because, if i did not, i probably would never remember it again. Very Good Advice! Look, i'm serious here. I help total strangers with history; i sure as hell would try to help my fellow shycolleagues here on the board. If yall need some advice or help, just email me at my adress. See, i plan on being a teacher myself someday, if i can ever get over my shyness and depression. But it's getting better.

Oh, another thing. If you need some boost to help you stay awake, coffee is excellent for this, perhaps just one cup in the morning would do. If you have trouble relaxing and staying focused in class, tea is good for this. By the way, which vitamin is it that helps your memory out? Is it B6, B12, or some other? I forget.

Yeah, unfortunately I find formal education generally involves studying things I don't really want to study, or looking at them in a way I'm not interested in. I found that with history in school. I stopped studying it as soon as I could, despite the fact I do like learning the subject, just not in a formal academic environment.
I once was considering going on to graduate level, but decided against it seeing as how tedious I've begun to find the work, essays etc.
I'd rather get out of uni and research things when and how I want to on my own. The thought of that is helping a lot with getting the work done now...lol

In the good old days, people would smoke tobacco to help them focus. It is actually very good for that. Or you could try cocaine.
Today I met an old man who was smoking. He said his carotid artery is 90% blocked and they will have to surgically clear it.
