How can someone who has never been in a click or group of friends make freinds without coming across as desperate or intrusive especially when shy

i do those things volunteer go to church, go top college. surrounding myself with people is not a problem . becoming a part of them is.

True. It's easier if open yourself up to them and let them come to you, rather than staying by yourself avoiding people hoping they come to you. I've always found it easier if you try to befriend one or two approachable-seeming people rather than try too hard to be outgoing to impress everyone.

I'm not really part of any groups, well I guess my clubbing buddies count as one. I'm like on the outer rim of groups.

Actually, this is probably the best way for us shy people. I've tried this and it has worked to a degree but my shyness holds me back from fully being accepted.
