Does anyone else dread attending the luncheons at conferences? I'd happily not eat for the week if I could avoid joining a table of strangers and having to try to muddle through small talk. Usually, I'm the only one at the table who doesn't say anything. I hate it!
Do any of you have any suggestions for how to start conversations? What kinds of questions can I ask to try to get a person to begin talking about themselves? Any ideas?

this is one of the things I hated most about high school. I was always afraid that i wouldnt find anybody to sit with. often times i sat with people who were nice and accepting but who frankly I did not enjoy being around. last time i had to do this was at college during orientation but i found one person that i felt somewhat comfortable with. i always pray that at banquets and stuff the tables will be assigned by names. then if you are shy people wont just think your a loner.

I get a bit anxious but not too bad thankfully. I know I used to hate it but now I relish sitting on my own or not making conversation sometimes. I think I've become alot more comfortable with being alone.
Plus if the food is nice I don't want to waste mouth time chatting ;D
