I like listening to Black Label Society. Whenever I start feelin down I put on Sonic Brew, brings me back to true reality. That I should not be feelin down, even though some aspects of my life kinda suck, compared to others on the planet im living in paradise.
Everyone is different though, I can relate to this band. My suggestion is to listen to as many bands as you can, find someone who you can relate with, it will really help you get through your time of need.

I usually have a favourite song of the moment, which I sometimes play before going out, so when I'm walking it provides a sort of soundtrack in my head. Also, dubiously, I engage in 'bedroom dancing' - this involves sticking the cd player on and whirling around like a dervish, liberating, but very embarassing if caught (especially as I'm in my 30's).

i have three sets of music i listen to when i'm feeling down. if i've just gotten into my rut, i listen to sad, slow jpop songs, or some of the slower evanescence songs. when i'm ready to be happy again, i listen to more sugary jpop. and sometimes i need something loud. usually system of a down. when i'm not feeling bad, i generally listen to jrock, which is a good mix of hard songs, rock, and ballads.

I'm irreligious, but when I need a lift I tend to listen to old country gospel blues (eg Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Willie Johnson, etc.)

Monty Python's The Bright Side of Life? Makes me laugh. Not completely upbeat--"Life's a piece of sh-it, when you look at it"--but that makes it not too sugary to listen too. Not that they'd do a sugary song.

It was in Life of Brian. They sung it while they were nailed to crucifixes, by the way. LOL And, I'm thinking in a Flying Circus skit.

I need positive music. My playlist is full of sad punk rock songs. Happy songs are just not me.

Matchbox 20 sings a song called "Unwell". It's about the singer dealing with feeling like people are talking about him. I consider it positive because I always feel like people are saying sh*t behind my back so it makes me feel better knowing that somebody in a successfull band feels the same way (at least at the time he wrote the song if not as often as I do).

One band that can really cheer me up especially if im feeling down with shyness related issues is REM. I partly feel like i can relate to the band because Michael Stipe is so famously shy himself. I also listen to a lot of Radiohead when i'm feeling lonely, they dont cheer me up but i feel their music (especially the last 3 albums) totally reflect my mood when I feel lonely and this somehow makes me feel less lonely, weird huh?
