Do you have trouble making friends? I do too, but have had some luck/good skill (who knows which...) recently and wanted to share some advice.
First, I made my first real friend a few months back at work. Been good friends since, hanging out and stuff. Then I went to this event with her and her friend. Asked my friend to let her friend know I was interested in being her friend. She agreed quite a while later and recently I've started instant messaging her once a week usually about an hour a session. She invited herself and a friend to an activity that my original friend and I are planning (another opportunity to extend my social circle with whoever she brings along).
Now, theres this girl I used to work with like 3-4 years back, we email each other maybe once every couple of months and always try to have lunch when I'm working in the city, which is like every 6 months . Then there's the tech guy I work near at the moment. My original friend and I have become friends with him (me only recently, haven't actually done anything outside of work).
Recently I gave myself a kick in the ass and decided to try and get all these loose ends (work acquaintances) together for an event on the weekend. Every person I mentioned is keen Gives me opportunities to get phone numbers and hint that I'd like to catch up more...And the funny thing is one of them is really excited because this activity brought back memories from her days at school, haha.
There's two other people I 'might' invite, I haven't really had a whole lot to do with them, but it can't hurt.
Basically, take opportunities, work on those loose ends. Got a few people you haven't caught up with in a while? Get an event happening.
