Friday 18th April
Rest day
Saturday 19th April
Long run today. 15 miles from Shaw’s Bridge to Laganside - and back. I walked a few of the miles in between. This will be the route for next Saturday’s longest run of 18 miles. It was a good run. Luckily the high temperatures from earlier in the week had gone. I lost a bottle of my magic brew on the way. I can’t afford for that to happen again next week. My cousin says he has a really good money belt big enough to hold the bottles firmly in place. As soon as he sets the moths free that have taken up residence in it he’ll let me have it.
Sunday 20th April
And speaking of my cousin, he turned up this morning for our ten-mile run sporting a brand new pair of flash, steal your girlfriend, cut off your head and spit down your throat, training shoes. Ha ha ha! The fool! He obviously hasn’t read the ‘Marathon Runner’s Bible.’ Chapter 15 of the Bible gives the ‘Marathon Runners 10 Commandments.’ Commandment number 1 clearly states: ‘Thou shalt not turn up for a ten-mile run with a brand new pair of training shoes.’
A few minutes into our run, he started complaining about sore toes, sore heels and sore every other part of the body known to mankind. He even blamed the war in Iraq on his shoes at one stage. He started whinging again because the café at Laganside was shut. I told him that it was Easter Sunday morning but he wasn’t listening.
Monday 21st April
Only two weeks left until race day. You wouldn’t half know it! The amount of runners out and about at the minute is unbelievable. There also seems to be a lot of people out on mountain bikes. Surely that’s cheating!
Tuesday 22nd April
12 mile run this morning. I started from Drum Bridge and ran the scenic route to Shaw’s Bridge and back again. Another good run. As I was running, the advert for the Marathon came on my Walkman. Hearing it really gave me a buzz – or was that just a loose wire!
Wednesday 23rd April
I’m injured! Don’t panic. I’m not that bad. I bit into an apple today and I’ve cut the top of my mouth - just behind my front teeth. It is pretty painful but I’ll soldier on.
Thursday 24th April
Mouth feeling a lot better today. 12 mile run over the same course as Tuesday. I’ve been thinking about how my training has come along. I’ve noticed that I’m being lapped a lot less by Jimmy Saville look-alikes than I was a few weeks ago, which can only be a good thing.
