Transformers 4 - I enjoyed it, lots of action-y robot battles and explosions! This one also had some good references from the cartoon series and unlike the previous movies actually sets up a plot for future sequels.

Her
Clearly, people in the future like to where their trousers ridiculously high.
One reason you should see this movie: Joaquin Phoenix.
That guy is phenomenal. He's my dream Doctor Who...
It's about a guy who falls in love with a conscious operating system, kind of like a nice HAL. It is an incredible movie, utterly brilliant. I kinda think Phoenix looks like a young Tom Selleck with that magnificent moustache.
The movie is a brilliant look at a world we're inevitably heading toward. It explores every aspect in a mesmerisingly realistic way that is amazingly captivating.
For example, the scene where they first have 'sex' is really well directed, and highly disturbing. And the sexual surrogate scene is even more weird. It does help that the OS is played by Scarlett Johansson. Very lovely girl. A surprisingly good performance from her.
It really makes you think. It opens a debate in your head largely down to how well it's written and handled. It's a masterpiece, totally flawless.
It is a sci-fi comedy drama, and the drama is great but the comedy can be very much 'laugh-out-loud'. It portrays a futuristic world that is totally in keeping with what's currently achievable. It explores issues beautifully well. It's truly moving in parts.
Now, the language is very heavy in places, in particular, a game character who is the rudest most adorable thing imaginable. The swearing can also be quite random, often popping up when you least expect it. The sex scenes, whilst not visually graphic, are audibly graphic, and there is a bit of full frontal female nudity for a few seconds. So don't watch this movie with the kids.
I cannot recommend it enough, it came in 2013, is quite long, won and was nominated for a bucket load of awards, and is a real treat. All the performances are excellent, in particular Johansson, really believable as a lovely, thoughtful and complex conscious computer, but Phoenix, my God that guy can do no wrong. He gets better and better, and he's not even 40 yet (#Phoenix13th).
So, so amazing. Really lovely, heartbreaking and transcendental all mixed together. You need to go and watch it. Right now. Go on...
10 huge sporks outta 10.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
First of all, whoever gave this movie a 12A rating in the UK needs a slap. The F-word and machine gunning chimps are not acceptable for children. With the amount of violence, it is a pure 15 rating. All day long.
Secondly, my God, what a great movie. I genuinely believe it's a modern classic, one of the greats. The last movie, which rebooted the franchise, was better than all the classics except the first. This one easily matched it and I think it surpassed it. It was awesome.
It's anti-Hollywood. It's a war movie told properly. We see both halves of the divide equally, we both see what they lose, what they gain, divisions, complexities of war rarely seen in Hollywood. It is a masterpiece of cinema storytelling. It is an incredibly realistic representation of war. Everything is believable. The motivations involved are genuine. There are moments of real humour and warmth, moments of real tense drama, and other moments that are heartbreaking. There are moments that bring tears to one's eyes. It is in the mould of the all time great war movies. It really is.
It portrays war as what it is. There are no winners. There are no sides to take. With the recent conflict in Gaza, scenes I found particularly heart-wrenching were the slow motion scenes. The battles, slow-motion shots of apes and humans dying was brutal but brilliantly done. Never overplayed, it was subtle and devastating. The hardest one is when the humans are dancing, done in slow motion with no sound. You see plenty of children, and you knew what was coming. It was totally gut-wrenching. It was so well played, really moving, completely against the mess Hollywood usually makes of this kind of thing.
It was also shocking, you could never work out what was going to happen next. It swelled, started slowly, followed the natural pattern of war. It was magnificently done. A real good film. Everything was done right. The motivations of the characters and especially their expressions. It's a hard movie to watch, much of what happens is a consequence of the catastrophe of war. One little thing snowballs and before you know it, everything is out of control. It's a truly epic movie.
The acting is wonderful. Not a single bad performance, everybody is really trying. They're believable and well textured. The CGI is so lifelike it's frightening. I don't know how they managed it. The deaths were brutal but rarely shown on screen, probably how they got it to a 12A, but when I could hear little kids in the cinema upset at certain things, I thought maybe it should've been a higher rating. The direction is flawless. The whole movie is flawless. And the music. My word, spot on. Oh, it's so good.
It's a rough film. It's complex and out of control. It's got a strong heart and it's wonderfully human. It's cerebral. It makes you think. It's marvellous. There will be those who liked the originals who don't like it. But ignore them. It is a truly stunning movie.
My only criticism is how the hell a horse could support an orangutan riding it. Just a bugbear. And it's a very long movie. But apart from that, wow. Really impressed. Oh, and the baby chimp is utterly adorable. It's worth going to see just for him.
Can't wait for the third...
A huge 10 out of 10.

- Captain America : The Winter SoldierI have to agree with Scotty on this one, this movie was awesome. From the beginning to the end, there was not a dull moment to be found there. The special effects ( as is to be expected from Marvel movies ) were just fantastic to look at and both Black Widow and Falcon were portrayed by excellent actors ( Scarlett Johansson and Anthony Mackie respectively ). Have I mentioned how I loved the fighting scenes and how much of a badass The Winter Soldier is ? I'll stop there, that's quite enough praise for one movie .

- Pompeii
Also known as What the hell is Jon Snow doing in Pompeii : The Movie but they decided that title was way too long and so they shortened it to just Pompeii... In all seriousness, this was not as bad as I expected. Granted, I did read a few user reviews on IMDB beforehand so I was able to set my expectations accordingly. The story is nothing to write home about, indeed it's easy to argue that the theme of gladiators vs evil romans has been done better in the past not only in movies ( Gladiator ) but even in TV Series ( Spartacus ). It's a shame because I think they could have done more with the dramatic events that unfolded in Pompeii. I kind of enjoyed Kiefer Sutherland's portrayal of a Roman senator but that's pretty much the only nice thing I'm going to say about the acting. I will admit however that the special effects deserve a special nod, the second part of the movie partly redeemed the first just because of how stunning they were.

We say Boyhood the other day. The novel feature of this movie is that it was shot over about 12 years as the actors themselves were growing up. I was worried it'd be a pretentious gimmick, but in fact they nailed it. It really added a sense of realism that I haven't experienced with any other movie. The script and acting were right on the mark too, with several memorable scenes and characters. Could maybe have been trimmed down a little, but still a gem.

The Wolf of Wall Street - Brilliant movie, not for the faint-hearted or easily shocked! A tad long at just under 3 hours maybe, Leonardo DiCaprio is fantastic in the lead role. A fascinating story too. I found some scenes hard to watch as the whole lifestyle and attitude to life that the characters, in the main, choose to follow doesn't sit too well with me.
Lucy - aka, 'The Film Black Widow should've had' - Really enjoyed this, rocks along at a good pace, great action/chase scenes. It has Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, and Choi Min Sik (Oldboy, awesome film, see it if you haven't already) in it, reason enough to watch. At times it felt that Luc Besson couldn't decide if he was making a sci-fi thriller, Korean gangster movie, or a social commentary on human evolution, but the end result was a top notch popcorn movie. With a few thought provoking tit-bits thrown in for good measure.

I also enjoyed that film, even though I don't like horror films and I know it's not technically a horror film but an examination of horror films.

- Kung FuryI've just watched my first "movie" on Steam. Never expected to actually use it for anything else than games before but Kung Fury was free and the user reviews were "overwhelmingly positive" which made me want to give it a shot. This was the most silly thing I've watched since that fantastic promo made for Far Cry 3 : Blood Dragon by the guys from CorridorDigital ( here's the link to the youtube video if anyone's interested : Blood Dragon : The Cyber War ). It's basically an '80s action movie but oh my goodness it was so fun, I can't recommend it enough to you guys if you have 30 minutes to spare. Here's the youtube video of Kung Fury for those among you that don't use Steam and would rather not install it just to watch a short movie :

Saw Ex Machina last night. I was expecting something good, and while it wasn't terrible, definitely felt anticlimactic. The ending lacked surprise, and generally felt like they missed an opportunity to do something clever. The movie scene has seemed pretty flat lately. A while ago I saw Whiplash, though, which was amazing. Surprised it didn't take more oscars, but then that stuff never makes sense anyway. I'm also ashamedly curious to see how Pixels turns out, which may well be the most ridiculous movie trailer I've ever seen. How the legendary Peter Dinklage wound up in a film with Adam Sandler is bizarre enough on its own.

I also saw Ex Machina, am very disappointed in myself for not seeing the ending coming and being duped. It was pretty entertaining I suppose but I guess other films such as Blade Runner or anime like ghost in the shell dealt with that topic in better wars.
I also saw whiplash recently and that was a fantastic film, would watch again, JK Simmons is a fantastic actor.

Jurassic World - I loved it! Has some silly moments but has some great nods to the original movie.
Pitch Perfect 2 - Fun movie, catchy songs, with some good surprise cameos.
