Ive got an online freind writing an argumentative essay on this specifically callinga christmas tree a christmas tree as opposed to holiday tree. my question is what would go atop a holiday tree given that a star and an angel have christian meaning. mabye a snowman I think this is an instance where both sides overreacted. First the liberal side making everything politically correct about never saying Merry Christmas, and then the conservatives getting so upset and that you always have to say Merry Christmas in every instance. Why can't people just do what they want? If a store wants to have a Chirstmas tree, so what? If they want to be more inclusive and just say happy holidays, whats the big deal? Let everyone make their own decision. So what if a person wants to make a holiday tree instead of a christmas tree? I heard the funniest thing on the O'Reily Factor(I only watch it occasionly for the humor in seeing what absurd things he will say), where he said in a very serious tone that, "we are investigating the various instances of stores that say Happy Holidays" like the issue was akin to terrorists invading the country. I mean, you can't make this stuff up. Isn't there anything more important to discuss?

I dont think its the jewish or muslims so much as its the atheists.
other religions dont use trees or celebrate christmas so what need would they have of a holiday tree anyways.

Would anyone be offended if i said Merry Christmas? I didn't think so. So Merry Christmas. By the way anyone who gets offended by people saying Merry Christmas needs to get a life and anyone who says that me saying Merry Christmas isn't inclusive of their religion I really don't have time to say all the religious greetings so I'm just gonna say merry Christmas.

Have to agree it's a non-issue. Everyone should be able to celebrate how they like. I don't like the way radical Christians go around thinking the mid-winter holiday period is their own little creation, and everyone should call it 'Christmas', yet I see no reason to try to make every single public display politically correct. People just need to be more tolerant and focus on the bigger issues.

Another vote here for it being a non issue. People should be able to call it whatever they like.

It is funny how Christians can be culturally dominant in the US and at the same time keep whining about how they are so victimized. The "Happy Holidays" thing was an effort to be more inclusive in a pluralistic society. Sure, some people go overboard. But people who are in a position of dominance should not whine. It's like Whites who resent Blacks and immigrants and men who resent women because society recognizes past (and ongoing) prejudice.

Anything. By the way a star does not explicitly have a christian meaning. In soviet union by the way there was no christmas and people just celebrated new years.

Happy holidays, what nonsense. Merry Christmas to all! (In 23 days, that is) ;D

what about the gov. and tax-funded institutions saying Merry Christmas or having Christmas trees and nativity scenes.

what about the gov. and tax-funded institutions saying Merry Christmas or having Christmas trees and nativity scenes. Personally, I would say alright to the Christmas trees and the "Merry Christmas" but no to the nativity scene. That last is blatantly religious--the others seem more like harmless traditions that have more to do with the season than the holiday, if I'm making sense.

It's not really an issue... It's not like it belongs to only one group of people in particular. People seem to forget that the Christian's merely adopted the older festival of Yule, and that Jesus (assuming he existed) was probably born in September.
On a separate note... It's actually illegal to celebrate Christmas in England lol.
