Its the age old question so I thought I'd post it here for discussion. Why do bad things happen to good people? Such as why do innocent children die, while murderers get away with killing people. These kind of seemingly unjust things happen all the time in the world. If you don't believe in God than its just random and nothing means anything, therefore these things are easily explained. But if you believe in a just, all-powerful God who can control things, then how could he let it happen?
I personally am agnostic and believe that if there is a God, he has no control over our lives. He merely set things into motion. If he does have control he's doing a terrible job at it. And I hope no one says everything does have a good reason, because I can not contemplate the good reason to have thousands of children dying of starvation everyday in the world.

Ill give you a biblical answer .
1because of sin 2 because God allows it for some reason
look at the life of joseph. He was sold into slavery and falsly improsoned for raping potifers wife (she came on to him and he refused) eventually Joseph became ruler of egypt and saved the people from famine. None of that would have happened had he not expereinced hardships at times when he was in the right.
another example is Job in which God allowed satan to attack job . This was to test the faith of Job and bring their relationship closer Job ended up receive abundant wealth as a result over that which had lost
the bible teaches that God will never allow more hardships on a christian then he or she can handle . He knows all the what ifs and that is why there is a reason for everything because God allows it when there were other posible twists and turns.
I know if I had never been bullied and had all the things ive wanted id be a totally different person and probly not be intersted in doing christian counseling and psychological counseling as a career , Id also probly be at a diferent University and possibly not even be a christian or be a hypocritical one at best
hope that helps

Ill give you a biblical answer . 1because of sin 2 because God allows it for some reason What is the reason though? I first don't believe that because you are a Christian you are more protected by God. There are an endless stream of examples of Christians suffering greatly, and many that die young. You also say God will never give you more than you can handle, what about death? Why would he have a baby born into the world and then kill it after only a few months or years. What is the reason for that? It doesn't make the baby stonger, the baby is dead.

it isnt always about the individual. A baby dying or child might help the parents grow stronger and closer to God . I know of several people who became crhristians after going to funerals.
My sister had a miscarraige and her and her husband grew closer as a result

also I dont believe being a christian makes anyone more protected from suffereing so sorry if I gave you that idea. I do believe though that if you live life according to the bible it will give you a difefrent perspective when you go through struggles which will help you recover better.
I think that is why I have never gone into depression for more than a weekends time

Why do bad things happen to good people? Why not? Whether there is god or not, its quite obvious that bad things do happen to all people and no one is protected from chance. There is no garantees in life for anything. Religions do offer the tale of heaven/hell/etc... but that happens after you die.

My sister had a miscarraige and her and her husband grew closer as a result This is terrible way to see things in my opinion. That God says, "You know, Jane and Jim's marriage isn't going that great, I think I will kill their daughter to make them grow closer." Also its not true most of the time. I think a couple who has a young child die doesn't usually make their marriage better or make them better people. That kind of tragic death can devestate people the rest of their lives. Suffering does not always make someone a stronger person, it many times cripples them and they end up weaker and more fearful of the world than before. The arguement that God controls everything and even terrible things are good just doesn't hold water. That is a Machiavellian God who will kill people and cause intense suffering because he thinks the ends justify the means. If I killed your parents and then said I did it to make you a stronger person, I don't think you would buy that arguement or anyone would think what I did was right. So why is it right if God does it?

Oh lord, here we go again. I don't know why bad things happen to good people exactly. All i know is that the world is a harsh place that does not care at all about us humans. Therefore, we have to look at out for each other, because the earth isn't going too. Maybe Hobbes was right after all.

From a purely objective standpoint there is no such thing as a good or a bad occurrence. Things just happen; they are neither good nor bad. Good and bad are judgments which exist only in the human mind.
