My dad has a couple of guns and a license to carry one on his person. I don't like guns but considering the level of violent crime in the US, I can understand why the average person might feel the need to have one for protection.

No way I would ever carry a gun. Could you honestly imagine shooting someone? Even if that someone was threatening you or robbing you or what ever I couldn't imagine myself ever actually killing some one for any reason. Besides, any weapon you carry can be taken away from you and used against you.

Hmm I've felt the urge a few times particularly when some snapper head in front of me at the checkout decides to buy $50 worth of groceries with loose change.

Hunting/defence against wild animals and recreational shooting are fine (within reason), but as you say they require certain types of weapons, not automatics. Nor do they require the indivdual to carry the weapon around day to day. Licensing clearly isn't very strict (otherwise this kid wouldn't have been able to purchase guns), but if only guns for those activities were permitted, then it would be easier to have stricter licencing and controls, with full metal health checks IMO. It apparently takes about a year in this country in order to gain a licence to own a gun of this type. Hey, this is amazing. Me and Tal are actually in agreement!!!! Well, sort of. I'm not sure how long it takes to get a liscense for carrying handguns here. I think it differs from state to state. Also, it's probably true that the pawn shops may not be too strict on who they sell their second hand products too, or may not follow their state's particular laws for sale of weapons. This guy had a 9mm automatic, correct? Well, a 9mm really isn't the kind of gun that would attract an unsual amount of attention from cops or wardens or whatever. A 9mm is a very common handgun, i'd argue. Lots of retail stores and specialized outdoors' stores like Academy sell them. I'm sure pawn shops all over the country sell them too. It's a small, economical type of gun.

Besides, any weapon you carry can be taken away from you and used against you. I wouldn't want to shoot someone, no. But i have been in a couple of fights before, and i can understand how people can let their emotions take control of themselves to the point of inflicting violent harm against the other person. This never happened to me, but i've seen and heard of people getting badly hurt in a couple of fight incidents. One of my friends got beat up by a small gang when we were i high school. Thank God they didn't have guns at the time. In addition, few violents crimes occur between people who do not know each other. Helping people to learn to master their passions can go a long way to cutting down the violent crime rate in the world.

We need guns! Liquor stores aint gonna rob themselves.
If I was able to get a gun when I was a teen I wouldn't be suffering now! Now, I'm just too lazy.

everybody should always carry a gun, cause theres no reason we should feel less protected than other people, thats what my teacher has lead me to believe he says theres a city in Georgia where its against the law not to have a gun and its crime rate is almost none

But I have to say that I'm skeptical about your teacher's claim. Doesn't sound too constitutional like. If we're truly that paranoid that we have to carry a gun to feel safe then we're in deep trouble. Its true we live in a relatively violent nation, but what are the odds that you'll ever need that gun to defend yourself? Answered my own question. Its Kennesaw Georgia, and its true, but I don't think I'm moving to this paradise on earth. ;D en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennesaw,_Georgia

a gun can be an equalizer, that's for sure. i wonder how much rape and assault would be happening in our society if everyone were armed...and we all knew it. just maybe it would bring back civility.

Guns, like nuclear weapons, are an effective detterrent, that's for sure. Though they are rarely used, the realization that others have wepaons of some kind may stop a fight or assualt before it happens. But though i am not anti-gun in this discussion, i must agree with Zaab that if we must feel the need to protect ourselves 24/7/365 then yes, we have a problem. I don't carry a gun with me to work or school, never. I don't even have a concealed handgun permit, and i'm not sure if i'd want one. Perhaps instead of having lethal projectile guns, we shoudl invest money into developing knock-out projectiles of some kind. I'd like to see more effective, non lethal tasers become standard issue sidearms for police. Once they work out the bugs of the devices of course.

If guns were banned I would just buy them illegally. People already do that, in addition to drugs.
