Does Reality TV seem . . . Real?
I find scripted television much more believable than the strange characters the hunt up for reality shows.

With the very occasional exception I can't stand reality tv. In most cases they seem to be filled with a bunch of attention seekers playing up to cameras. If thats reality I'll prefer to stay in a fantasy world.
A good documentary would be more suited to the term 'reality' if you ask me.

I seem to think that reality tv brings out the worse in people that are in them. I would rather watch HGTV or DIY (which I don't watch) than watch another reality show. I prefer sci-fi anyways.

Sadly most of British tv seems to be gearing that way at the moment

I never saw the appeal in those shows, but unfortunately they seem pretty popular, including the cross-breeds of reality with practically every other TV genre.
I think it's semi-reality. They're real people, in extreme circumstances, usually competing for some outrageous prize. The people on those shows must have been hand-picked as the ones most likely to attract ratings. That usually means extroverted, extreme personalities that are likely to collide spectacularly. Real, but extreme.

I think most of so-called reality television is misnamed. Most of those shows are just long-term game shows. When was the last time you had to chug a cockroach smoothie or vote someone off the island? The Real World is the only show I can think of off the top of my head that comes even a little close to reality – no prize money, no competitions, no planned evictions.

Reality TV is the bane of mankind, in my opinion. I don't believe any of the crap that i see in these shows. I think it's all half-way scripted and filled with the biggest losers they can find. I do find watching these losers hilariously funny, at times.

Reality TV is scripted just like any other TV show in my opinion. I dont know for a fact it is it just seems like it. All bullshit.

Some of it seems scripted but I think thats because they can show what they want and can control what happens. I like some reality TV like Big Brother but not much else.

I have occasionally watched The Apprentice which I don't mind too much. I think it helps that there is little reason for the contestants to play up to the camera as theres no audience participation. The contestants can still be quite annoying and arrogant but I can put up with that as you get to see Alan Sugar cut them down a peg or two later ;D

How could reality TV be real? Would you act normally if you new millions of people were watching you?

Reality TV was fun at first, but for me so much of it's just gotten stupid. Flipping through the channels I landed on a show called "Top Chef" on Bravo one day last week, and it was just fascinatingly idiotic. They brought together, as you might have guessed, a bunch of very talented chefs to compete for a prize of a fully equipped kitchen, a bunch of money, and some other stuff. But instead of real contests, they did crap like making the chefs cook for a gaggle of 1st graders; making them cook up a dish in a half hour using only gas station food ingredients; having them cook, in half an hour, a reheatable meal that they had to be able to heat to perfection in one go, in a microwave (which many had not used in years)... And just for that it would have been stupid. Who needs their chef to be able to do any of that BS? BUT to make things worse, the judges are all Simon Cowell clones--just total and complete assholes. Like after the microwave challenge, the head judge acted literally disgusted at the three "worst" chefs in that challenge, and was ranting about how he wished he could get rid of all three at once because he was so appalled that their dishes didn't come out very well. WTF? Is that what people like to watch--contestants getting humiliated? And even though the contestants seemed, for the most part, so much more level-headed than a lot of the ditzes they get on reality TV--the judges kept egging them on trying to get everyone to hate everyone else and to go for the jugular. They got pissed when everyone was nice to one another, but to be fair they also got pissed when one person betrayed another. It was nuts. I'm just sick of most reality TV now, whether it's real or not--and I don't think much of it is. I was reading some article maybe in Newsweek, I think it was..? And it was talking about all the tricks they use to get a good storyline for every episode. In fact, a lot of reality TV "editors" are apparently lobbying to be included as part of the Screen Writer's Guild, since they're basically doing the job of a story writer and sometimes scripter, too, but without getting credited as such. It's especially annoying the way the advertisements for all of them seem to try to imply that they're the "realest" reality show out there . I have to admit though... I still think Iron Chef is really cool. ;D

i've given up on tv. i only get three channels (PBS, NBC, and Fox- and Fox has the crappiest shows!), and next fall i will be taking night classes.
tv is a waste of my time. i'd rather be here, tapping away at the keyboard!

I've hardly ever got time to watch t.v.
I do like big brother but apart from that i don't really like reality t.v. I watch one on sundays called castaway or something about two islands competing. But it can't relaly be called reality t.v, cause it's not like big brother wehere the camersas are on them all the time, theres people filming it so they always know the cameras are on thema nd it's really fake.
I like i'm a celebrity get me out of here actually. It's kinda funny.
But there's far to much reality shows on t.v.
