I heard about this religious ritual on the radio and just had to take a look. Supposedly no infant has ever been hurt by this ritual. There are people asking the government to stop these people from dropping their babies from the roof. What do you think? Indian baby dropping ritual.

First of all.. wow - I can't believe what i'm seeing. That sort of thing doesn't go on everyday where I live.. It's a bit of a culture shock just looking at that video.
Anyway... If the infant was being hurt, then yeah.. they should probably be stopped from doing it. *Although whether or not action should actually be taken is debateable - if it's an important part of a culture, you've got to be careful.
When you said 'dropped from the roof' I just imagined literally being dropped... They had a big sheet thing to catch them, which is not so bad.
The reason i'm complacent that the baby isn't usually hurt (though it may be quite emotionally traumatised) is because of the bone situation.
Babies have 300 bones, which will eventually grow together into the 206 bones an adult has. Also, a lot of babies' bones is made from cartilage which makes it more flexible. Basically, they can survive a bit more of a bashing than your full grown adult.

yeah...it's quite incredible. I just saw this like a day or two ago. My first thoughts when I saw it were similar to gaia's....it's quite a culture shock. I don't know about an intervention, though. I mean, they are not intentionally trying to hurt the babies...and it seems they're landing alright....and they must have been doing this for a very long time. One would think they'd have ended this sort of ritual by now, but...eh, I don't know. I wonder if it's something families are forced into, though.....if it's okay for the baby's parents to say they don't want their child 'dropped.' I'm not voting in the poll.....but, I actually think there are more important issues to be dealt with. Like the intentional harm that's being done to people in this world. *I've always been under the assumption that babies are much more fragile, though, since they're not fully develped. Like that "soft spot" on their head...

i couldn't decide right away. not too fond of government intervention in private life, but the more i think about it i really don't think people should drop their babies off roofs. i think it would take too long for a child who was dropped in infancy to begin to display symptoms of physical or emotional damage done, and you might never realize the connection. so i'm not reassured by their statement that no baby has ever been harmed by it.
