I can't tell you how many times, and in how many ways, society and the media reduces the lives of men into such narrowly defined terms as to make them out to be practically inhuman. Just today, someone told me that all it takes in life to make a man happy is, in his own words, "food, fucking, and to be left in peace." In so many words, this is what I've always been told about men's aims and ideals in life, but it can't simply be those three things. This would discount things such as: spiritual nourishment, intellectual curiosity, ideas and ideals, not to mention a million other things that comprise the life of a human being.
Shy men of the forum, I pose to you a question, and as a female trying to understand the male sex, I'd like an honest answer: Please, please tell me you're more than simply a consuming machine. Please tell me you're a little more complicated, a little deeper, a little more human. I don't want to believe that half of the human population on planet earth can reduce all their existential needs to such simplistic terms. I'm simply unwilling to believe all men are this way. Please prove me right.

Although I tend to enjoy the simpler things in life (and I'll admit, I have the guy urges ), It's certainly more than just food, fucking and my own space. I like to read as much as I can, and I think way too much about everything. I'm also curretnly on a project to improve myself. When it comes to the sex, I'm actually more desiring of having someone to put my arms around, not just someone to 'fuck'.

This thread needs a little humor. It's not that one gender is better than another, they're just different. They're wired different. Testosterone levels are different.. Maybe the book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus would be a good read. As far as being 'consuming machines', as in a materialistic and hedonistic way of living, I think that precentege of people who are like that is the same for both genders. And then you have people who are heading in the opposite direction. The great saints, for example, are coming from both genders. So it would be inaccurate to say that one or another gender is all bad, or all good, because that's not the reality of it.

It is sad that the above-described behavior is considered normal by so many people. I'm not that way at all, and I hope I've shown it in my posts. If those materialistic urges are normal, then I'm proud to be a freak!

Sounds like just as silly and inaccurate a stereotype as any about women being bad drivers, stupid bimbos, addicted to shoe shopping, etc. As far as I'm aware, it's usually said sorta tongue-in-cheek or as a frustrated rant. It's ridiculous to think one could generalize an entire sex any more than you can an entire race, age group, or any other demographic.
If you want to draw smarter / more spiritual / whatever people, I guess the best way would be the usual: put those sides of yourself on show more, and cast the net as far and wide as you can. If you don't know anyone like that, seek out new people, either by getting involved in communities they're more likely to be in, or hit the dating sites.

I guess this person already left these venerable halls, but if you're still looking for an answer as to whether there is more to men than bare necessities, then you may want to look up who invented just about every damn thing on this planet. Once you do that, we can move forward from there.

I wish I hadn't seen this comment, as it really bothers me...in so many ways... The OP posted a naive, sexist comment against men, why are you bothered by mine? Not really. The OP has apparently been bothered by how horrible men are portrayed and tend to present themselves. The OP obviously doesn't want to believe such stereotypes....and was only asking a question. So, she wasn't saying that's what she thinks of men...just that's what she's heard/seen thus far. You, on the other hand, posted a comment that I found to be quite condescending. So mostly men made all the inventions...so what is your point in saying that? That men are better than women and history apparently proves that only because they've been the sole force in shaping today's world? If anything...pointing that out could potentially make men look worse. The world is sh*t. But that's a different matter... I don't know what I'm getting at really, 'cause I could go off in all different directions. I'm just mainly bothered by the fact that you seem to be talking down to the OP, because she's a female. Anyway, I'm extremely bothered by all the male/female bashing going on around here lately. It's pretty ridiculous.

As far as I can tell, it only takes a quick glance around to notice that many men are poets, astronomers, engineers, good husbands and fathers, soldiers, physicists, doctors, friends, geeks, explorers, adventurers, lovers, astronauts (ok, not that many), but you get the point. I found the OP's question quite insulting, possibly written in a moment of frustration, but naive nonetheless.

No, it isn't, because I don't change my mind too often so it's not a passing fad. I would like to ask You though: how do You, honestly, assess the merit of the OP post?

You'll have to take my word for it that I have a pretty good idea. If you think that I don't then we can argue the point. Care to answer my question though?
